Cylinder Head: Removal
Prior to removing the cylinder head, the camshaft and crankshaft MUST be aligned and locked into position. If the procedure is not performed, SEVERE DAMAGE will result . The camshaft and the crankshaft MUST be locked with the appropriate special tools.

Refer to BELT, TIMING, REMOVAL .
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
- Perform the fuel pressure release procedure
Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
- Remove the camshaft bearing housing
Refer to HOUSING, CAMSHAFT BEARING, REMOVAL .
- Remove the turbocharger assembly
Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVAL .
- Remove the intake manifold
Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL .
- Remove the bolt (2) and the side timing belt cover (1).CAUTION:
The vacuum hose and the afterrun coolant pump hose have the same quick-connect fitting end. If removing both hoses, it is recommended that the hoses be marked at disassembly to avoid an incorrect installation. Failure to properly install the hoses can result in engine damage.
- Disconnect the afterrun coolant pump hose (2).
- Loosen the clamp (3) and disconnect the lower radiator hose.
- Remove the bolt (4) and disconnect the oil filter housing coolant return hose.
- Unlock and disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor wire harness connector (2).
- Disconnect the heater core inlet hose (1).
- Using the sequence shown in illustration, remove the cylinder head retaining bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head and gasket (1). Discard the gasket.
- If required, remove the bolts (2) and the thermostat housing from the cylinder head.
- If required, remove the tensioner lock nut (1) and the tensioner (2) from the cylinder head.
