Diagnostic Test

- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- Turn the ignition on.NOTE:
If the P2102 is intermittent, it is possible that the controller is overheating in extreme hot temperatures and this is considered a normal protection operation. No repair is necessary.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Look closely at the temperatures at which this DTC set.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Turn the ignition on.
- ASD RELAY
- Turn the ignition off.
- Install a known good ASD relay.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Replace the ASD Relay.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- THROTTLE PLATE INSPECTION
- Turn the ignition off.
- Remove the Air Cleaner Assembly from the Throttle Body.
- Check for any signs of a foreign material (ice or dirt) on the Throttle Plate or in the bore causing the Throttle Plate to stick.
Were any signs of foreign material or scoring of the throttle plate or bore found?
Yes
- Remove the debris if possible or replace the Throttle Body Assembly. Refer to THROTTLE BODY, REMOVAL . Disconnect the Battery when replacing the Throttle Body Assembly. After installation is complete, use a scan tool and perform the THROTTLE BODY SELF LEARN.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK FOR THE ETC (+) DRIVER CIRCUIT SHORTED TO THE ETC (-) DRIVER CIRCUIT
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the Throttle Body harness connector.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Check for continuity between the ETC (+) circuit and the ETC (-) circuit at the appropriate terminals of the PCM harness connector.
Is there continuity between the ETC (+) circuit and the ETC (-) circuit?
Yes
- Repair the short to between the ETC (+) Driver circuit and the ETC (-) Driver circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- CHECK THE ETC (+) DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the ETC (+) Driver circuit at the Throttle Body harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the ETC (+) Driver circuit?
Yes
- Repair the ETC (+) Driver circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Check for continuity between ground and the ETC (+) Driver circuit at the Throttle Body harness connector.
- CHECK THE ETC (-) DRIVER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Check for continuity between ground and the ETC (-) Driver circuit at the Throttle Body harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the ETC (-) Driver circuit?
Yes
- Repair the ETC (-) Driver circuit short to ground.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check for continuity between ground and the ETC (-) Driver circuit at the Throttle Body harness connector.
- ETC MOTOR
- Connect the Throttle Body harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the ETC Motor between the ETC (+) Driver circuit and the ETC (-) Driver circuit at the PCM C2 harness connector.
Is the resistance between 1.5 and 1.9 Ohms at closed throttle?
Yes
- Go To 8
No
- Replace the Throttle Body Assembly. Refer to THROTTLE BODY, REMOVAL . Disconnect the Battery when replacing the Throttle Body Assembly. After installation is complete, use a scan tool and perform the THROTTLE BODY SELF LEARN.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS
- Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the service information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
