Speedometer Inoperative Test

  1. Test drive vehicle and operate cruise control. If cruise control operates correctly, use ohmmeter to check continuity of circuit between speedometer and speed module. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If circuit is okay, replace speedometer assembly.
  2. If cruise control does not operate correctly, check vehicle speed sensor. See CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT. If speed sensor checks okay, go to next step. If speed sensor does not check okay, replace it. Retest speedometer.
  3. Check vehicle speed sensor wire circuit between speed module and instrument cluster for continuity. If continuity does not exist, repair or replace as required. Retest speedometer.
  4. If continuity exists, check for voltage and good ground in wiring circuits between speed sensor and speed module. If voltage and ground are present, replace speed module. Retest speedometer. If voltage and ground are not present, repair faulty circuit wires. Retest speedometer.
