Coolant Temperature Gauge Inoperative Test

  1. Ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. Disconnect coolant temperature sender connector on engine. If needle moves to full COLD position, gauge is okay. Go to next step. If needle does not move to full COLD position, check circuit between temperature sender and instrument cluster connector "A" for a short to ground. If circuit is okay, replace gauge. See Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  2. Using jumper wire, momentarily touch temperature sender connector terminal (Violet/Yellow wire) to ground. If needle moves to full HOT position, replace temperature sender. If needle does not move to full HOT position, check for an open circuit between sender and instrument cluster.
  3. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for cracks or poor contacts. If no problem is found, replace temperature gauge. If cracks or poor contact points are found, replace printed circuit.
