Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2024 RAM ProMaster EV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    NOTE:

    This DTC must be active for the results of this test to be valid. 

    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    4. With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
    5. With the scan tool, read and record Environmental Data to help identify the conditions in which the DTC was set.
    6. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    7. Cycle the ignition from off to on.
    8. Press and hold the brake pedal.
    9. Push the EPB Switch to release the Electric Park Brakes.
    10. Pull the EPB Switch to set the Electric Park Brakes.
    11. Push the EPB Switch to release the Electric Park Brakes.
    12. Release the brake pedal.
    13. Cycle the ignition from off to on.
    14. With the scan tool, read BSCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • The condition or conditions that originally set this DTC are not present at this time. Using the wiring diagrams as a guide, check all related splices and connectors for signs of water intrusion, corrosion, pushed out or bent terminals, and correct pin tension and repair as necessary. If no problems are found, test complete.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  2. CHECK THE BRAKE SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE (BSCM) FOR VOLTAGE RELATED DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any BSCM voltage related DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  3. CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH CONNECTOR/TERMINAL FOR DAMAGE 
    NOTE:

    Check all terminals for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals. 

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the Parking Brake Switch for debris or contamination.
    3. Inspect the Parking Brake Switch for proper mounting.
    4. Inspect the Parking Brake Switch for correct mechanical operation.
    5. Inspect the Parking Brake Switch harness and connector.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  4. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B60) EPB SWITCH POSITION 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  5. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B67) EPB SWITCH POSITION 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE BSCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  6. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B68) EPB SWITCH POSITION 3 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE BSCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  7. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B69) EPB SWITCH POSITION 4 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE BSCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  8. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B70) EPB SWITCH POSITION 5 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE BSCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  9. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B71) EPB SWITCH POSITION 6 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT AT THE BSCM HARNESS CONNECTOR 
    1. The ignition must be off when performing a resistance check to find a short between circuits.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector containing the circuits being tested. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    4. With the other lead of the DVOM probe all other circuits at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      With the circuit isolated there should be no continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit. 

      Is there continuity between the circuit being tested and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the short between the circuits that have continuity. Use the wiring diagram as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors to help isolate the location of the short.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  10. CHECK THE POSITION SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking a circuit for continuity to ground.
    2. Isolate the circuits by disconnecting the BSCM harness connector and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. At this time leave all in-line connectors connected. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Connect the negative lead of the DVOM to a known good ground.
    4. With the positive lead of the DVOM, probe the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector and check for continuity between all the Position Signal circuits and ground.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      NOTE:

      There should be no continuity between ground and the circuits being tested. 

      Is there continuity between ground and the circuits being tested?

      Yes 

      • Repair the Position Signal circuit(s) for a short to ground.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  11. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B60) EPB SWITCH POSITION 1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B60) EPB Switch Position 1 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  12. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B67) EPB SWITCH POSITION 2 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B67) EPB Switch Position 2 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  13. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B68) EPB SWITCH POSITION 3 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B68) EPB Switch Position 3 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  14. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B69) EPB SWITCH POSITION 4 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B69) EPB Switch Position 4 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  15. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B70) EPB SWITCH POSITION 5 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B70) EPB Switch Position 5 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  16. ISOLATE AND CHECK THE (B71) EPB SWITCH POSITION 6 SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. The ignition must be off when checking the continuity of a circuit.
    2. Isolate the circuit by disconnecting the BSCM and the Parking Brake Switch harness connector. Note:  Use the wiring diagram as a guide to follow the path of the circuit.
    3. Before measuring the resistance of any circuit, first measure the resistance between the two leads of the DVOM. Note:  The meter leads can add resistance to the measurement value.
    4. Connect one lead of the DVOM to the circuit being tested at the Parking Brake Switch harness connector.
    5. Connect the other lead to the circuit being tested at the BSCM harness connector and measure the resistance of the circuit.
      NOTE:

      When probing a circuit at an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness connector, always use an appropriate back probing tool to prevent any possible damage to the ECU terminals. 

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the (B71) EPB Switch Position 6 Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
  17. REPLACE THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH AND TEST FOR DTCS 
    1. Replace the Parking Brake Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to ELECTRIC PARK BRAKE (EPB) SWITCH .
    2. Perform the EPB VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to EPB VERIFICATION TEST .
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. With the scan tool, read BSCM DTCs.
    5. Cycle the ignition from off to on.
    6. Press and hold the brake pedal.
    7. Push the EPB Switch down to release the Electric Parking Brakes.
    8. Pull the EPB Switch up to apply the Electric Parking Brakes.
    9. Push the EPB Switch down to release the Electric Parking Brakes.
    10. Release the brake pedal.
    11. Cycle the ignition from off to on.
    12. With the scan tool, read BSCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Test complete.
  18. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect the BSCM harness connector.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect the BSCM harness connector. Be certain that the harness connector is fully seated and the connector lock is fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect the related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
      WARNING:

      To avoid possible serious or fatal injury, check brake capability is available before road testing.

    9. Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read BSCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the BSCM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BSCM VERIFICATION TEST .
