Diagnostic Test
- VERIFY THE VEHICLE IS NOT TOWING EXCESSIVE LOAD
- Verify with the customer if the vehicle is being used for towing. If it is, verify that the vehicle is not exceeding the towing capacity.
Is the vehicle being used to tow more that it's capacity?
Yes
- Inform the customer of the maximum towing capacity and proper towing practices.
No
- Go To 2
- Verify with the customer if the vehicle is being used for towing. If it is, verify that the vehicle is not exceeding the towing capacity.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read all DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Event Data and Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- Read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE COOLING SYSTEM FOR PROPER LEVEL
- Verify the cooling system is fulled to the proper level.
Is the cooling system at the proper level?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Verify the cooling system is fulled to the proper level.
- CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FOR PROPER FLUID LEVEL
- Verify the Transmission is at the proper level. Refer to FLUID AND FILTER, STANDARD PROCEDURE

Is the Transmission filled to the proper level?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Fill the Transmission to the proper level in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to FLUID AND FILTER, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Verify the Transmission is at the proper level. Refer to FLUID AND FILTER, STANDARD PROCEDURE

- CHECK THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER AND LINES FOR RESTRICTIONS OR DAMAGE
- Check the Transmission Oil Cooler and lines for the following:
- Check for physical damage to the Transmission Oil Cooler that could restrict oil flow through the cooler.
- Check for physical damage to the Transmission Oil Cooler that could restrict air flow through the cooler.
- Check for physical damage to the Transmission Oil Cooler lines/hoses that could restrict oil flow through the cooler.
Were any issues found with the Transmission Oil Cooler or Transmission Oil Cooler Lines/hoses?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Check the Transmission Oil Cooler and lines for the following:
- CHECK THE COOLING SYSTEM FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Check the cooling system for the following:
- Check the cooling system for proper coolant flow through the Radiator.
- Check for restrictions of the airflow through the Radiator.
- Verify the cooling fans are turning on and operating properly.
Were any issues found with the cooling system?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate repair.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 7
- Check the cooling system for the following:
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all TCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all TCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Event and Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read TCM DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
NOTE:If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, a diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to align the PROXI configuration data into the new ECU. Follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) terminals and connectors for corrosion, damage or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the TCM and perform programming and PROXI Configuration Alignment procedures. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - 948TE 9HP48 .
No
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST - 948TE 9HP48 .
- Test Complete.
