Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Test drive the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 3
No
- Go To 2
- CHECK CUSTOMER DRIVING HABITS NOTE:
The most likely cause of this DTC is the customer driving with one foot on the Accelerator pedal and the other resting on the Brake Pedal.
- Ask the driver of the vehicle if these conditions apply to their driving habits.
Are the listed conditions part of the customers driving habits?
Yes
- Advise the customer of what caused the DTC. This is normal operation of a ETC equipped vehicle because of safety issues.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- Ask the driver of the vehicle if these conditions apply to their driving habits.
- BRAKE SWITCH FOR PROPER FUNCTIONALITY
- With the scan tool, read the status of both Brake Switches with the Brake Pedal NOT PRESSED.NOTE:
Try pressing and releasing the pedal several times to verify that the switch is not sticking intermittently.
Does the scan tool display PRESSED for both signals with the Brake Pedal NOT PRESSED?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Go To 6
- With the scan tool, read the status of both Brake Switches with the Brake Pedal NOT PRESSED.
- CHECK THE BRAKE SWITCH FOR PROPER ADJUSTMENT
- Visually inspect the Brake Switch for proper adjustment.
Is the switch adjusted properly?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Properly adjust the Brake Switch and retest.
- Visually inspect the Brake Switch for proper adjustment.
- CHECK THE BRAKE SWITCH WIRING NOTE:
In order for a wiring issue to cause both signals to read PRESSED when the pedal is NOT PRESSED, Signal 1 circuit would have to be shorted to voltage, with an open in Signal 2 circuitry path simultaneously.
- Check the Brake Switch wiring for both of the above conditions present simultaneously.
Were the above wiring conditions found?
Yes
- Repair the Brake Switch wiring and retest.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Brake Switch in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SWITCH, STOP LAMP, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check the Brake Switch wiring for both of the above conditions present simultaneously.
- APP SENSOR SWEEP
- Check for any obstructions that may hold the Accelerator Pedal partially pressed.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, monitor both APP Sensor voltage readings.
- Slowly press the accelerator pedal from idle until it reaches the end stop near the floor.
- APP Sensor 1 voltage should start at approximately 0.45 volts and increase to approximately 4.6 volts.
- APP Sensor 2 voltage should start at approximately 0.22 volts and increase to approximately 2.3 volts.
Do the voltage readings follow as described above?
Yes
- This fault is occurring due to the PCM receiving a brake pedal PRESSED input and APP Sensor input applied simultaneously. One of these inputs may be intermittently applying. Monitor both inputs while test driving the vehicle to determine which is applying erroneously. One way to check for erroneous Brake Switch input is to operate the vehicle with the speed control set at a steady speed. A Brake Switch input will cause the speed control to kick off.
No
- Check the Signal and Return circuits for opens, shorts, or high resistance. If no problems are found, Replace the APP Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to PEDAL, ACCELERATOR, REMOVAL . After installation is complete, with a scan tool select the ETC RELEARN function to relearn the APP Sensor values.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
