Lamps/Lighting - Exterior (Service Information): Description
The exterior lighting system for this model includes the following exterior lamp units:
- Center High Mounted Stop Lamp - A Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) is centered at the top of the backglass.
- Front Fog Lamps - Vehicles equipped with this option have a front fog lamp unit mounted near each outboard end of the front fascia, below the front lamp units.
- Front Lamp Units - This vehicle can be equipped with either a standard halogen Bi-function projector lamp unit with dedicated LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) and LED park/turn lamps or an optional HID Bi-function projector lamp unit with dedicated LED DRL and LED park/turn lamps.
- License Plate Lamp - A LED rear license plate lamp unit is mounted to the rear fascia, just above the license plate tub.
- Outside Mirror Lamps - The outside rear view mirrors are available with approach lamps. The approach lamps are used on vehicles equipped with the Passive Entry (PE) system and incorporate an LED unit located behind the outer edge of each outside rear view mirror glass and are serviced only as a unit with the mirror glass and case assembly.
- Rear Lamp Units - An outboard rear lamp unit incorporating multiple LED units to serve tail, stop and turn signal functions is mounted to the rear of each quarter panel on either side of the deck lid opening. A center rear lamp unit incorporates multiple LED units to serve as an auxiliary tail lamp and the backup (reverse) lamps.
- Front Side Marker Lamp Units - A LED front side marker lamp unit is mounted in the front fascia just in front of the front wheel opening.
- Rear Side Marker Lamp Units - A LED rear side marker lamp unit is mounted in the rear fascia just behind the rear wheel opening.
These exterior lighting lamp units and their controls are combined to provide the following exterior lighting features:
- Automatic Headlamps - Vehicles with the automatic (auto low) headlamps option are equipped with a unique headlamp switch that includes an A (Automatic) position and have an automatic headlamp sensor to sense ambient light levels. The automatic headlamp sensor is integral to the sun load sensor located on the top of the instrument panel. Refer to SENSOR, SUN, DESCRIPTION .
- Automatic High Beam Control
- Vehicles equipped with the optional automatic high beam control system include a unique digital light-sensing imager camera inside the vehicle on the windshield next to the rear view mirror. The conditions that need to be met for Automatic High Beam Control (AHBC) are:
- The headlamp switch needs to be set to AUTO.
- Customer preference in the radio options needs to be enabled.
- The stalk moved to the back/high beam position.
- Appropriate light conditions.
The Forward Facing Camera Module (FFCM) module also monitors the field of view for vehicles. If the FFCM detects a vehicle in the field of view, the FFCM will stop the request to turn high beams ON.
- Backup Lamps - The backup (or reverse) lamps include LED units, reflector and clear lens that are integral to each outboard end of the center rear lamp unit.
- Brake Lamps - The brake (or stop) lamps include multiple LED units, a reflector and a red lens that are integral to each outer rear lamp unit, and the red lens and multiple LED units of the CHMSL.
- Daytime Running Lamps - Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) are standard equipment on vehicles manufactured for sale in Canada and optional on vehicles manufactured for the United States. Vehicles with the DRL feature enabled illuminate the DRL LED Array to serve as the DRL. If allowed by law in the country in which the vehicle was purchased the Daytime Running Lights can be turned ON and OFF using the Uconnect® System.
- Exterior Lamp Fail-Safe Operation - The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and the Body Control Module (BCM) provide a fail-safe feature which will automatically turn ON the low beam headlamps and all park lamps when the ignition switch is in the ON position and there is no detected input from either the headlamp switch or the multifunction switch, no communication from the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) or Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) or when the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus is inoperative.
- Exterior Lamp Load Shedding - The BCM provides a battery saver feature which will automatically turn OFF all exterior lamps that remain ON with the ignition switch in the LOCK position after a timed interval of about eight minutes.
- Front Fog Lamps - The optional front fog lamps include the white LED Array, optics and clear lens of each adjustable front fog lamp unit.
- Hazard Warning Lamps - The hazard warning lamps include the bulbs, LED units and lenses of each lamp in the right and left, front and rear turn signal circuits.
- Headlamp Time Delay - On vehicles equipped with the automatic headlamps option, when this feature is enabled the low or high beam headlamps remain illuminated for a programmable delay interval of 0 (disabled), 30, 60 or 90 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned to the OFF position. This feature is customer programmable using the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) switches and the Uconnect® touchscreen module in the Radio Receiver Module (RRM).
- Headlamps With Wipers - Vehicles with the automatic headlamps option have an automatic headlamps-with-wipers feature. When this feature is enabled and the AUTO position of the headlamp switch is selected, the headlamps are turned ON automatically whenever the windshield wipers are turned ON; and, if the headlamps were turned ON automatically when the wipers were turned ON, they will also turn OFF automatically when the wipers are turned OFF if the appropriate ambient light conditions exist. This feature is customer programmable using the EVIC switches and the Uconnect® touchscreen module in the RRM.
- Mirror Courtesy Lamps - Vehicles with these lamps illuminate a Light Emitting Diode (LED) unit behind the outer edge of each outside rear view mirror glass in conjunction with the interior courtesy lamps.
- Optical Horn - Also known as flash-to-pass, the beam selection function of the multifunction switch control stalk has a momentary intermediate position that allows the headlamp high beams to be flashed momentarily, without changing the headlamp beam selection.
- Park / Tail Lamps - The front park lamps include multiple clear LEDs integral to each front lamp unit and a single source amber LED mounted in the side reflex which is mounted in the front fascia. The rear tail lamps include the multiple LED units, a reflector and a red lens integral to both the outer and center portions of each rear lamp unit, the clear bulbs and red lenses of each rear side marker LED lamp as well as the LED and clear lens of the license plate lamp unit.
- Turn Signal Lamps - The front turn signal lamps include multiple amber LED units, a reflector and a clear lens that are integral to each front lamp unit. The rear turn signal lamps include the multiple RED LED units, a reflector and a clear lens that are integral to each outer rear lamp unit.
Other components of the exterior lighting system for this vehicle include:
- Antilock Brake System Module - An Antilock Brake System (ABS) module is located in the engine compartment below the brake master cylinder. Refer to MODULE, ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS), DESCRIPTION .
- Backup Lamp Switch - A Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) performs the backup lamp switch function. The TRS is incorporated into the valve body.
- Body Control Module - The BCM is located beneath the instrument panel on the passenger side of the vehicle. Refer to MODULE, BODY CONTROL (BCM), DESCRIPTION .
- Brake Lamp Sensor - A lever-actuated brake pedal position sensor serves as the brake lamp switch in this vehicle. The brake pedal position sensor is located on the brake pedal support bracket under the instrument panel and is actuated by a pin on the brake pedal arm when the brake pedal is pressed.
- Hazard Switch - A latching push button-actuated hazard switch is integral to the Integrated Center Stack (ICS) located in the center stack area of the instrument panel.
- Headlamp Switch - A rotary knob-actuated headlamp switch is located in the headlamp switch bezel of the instrument panel. The headlamp switch is used to select the park lamps, headlamps or fog lamps.
- Instrument Panel Cluster - The IPC is located in the instrument panel above the steering column opening, directly in front of the driver. Refer to DESCRIPTION .
- Integrated Center Stack - The ICS contains the hazard switch. The ICS is located in the center stack area of the instrument panel. Refer to MODULE, INTEGRATED CENTER STACK (ICSM), DESCRIPTION .
- Multifunction Switch - The multifunction switch is located on the steering column, just below the steering wheel. A control stalk that extends from the left side of the switch is used to select the turn signal lamps (right or left) and to select the headlamp beam (low, high or optical horn).
- Park Brake Switch - A park brake switch is located on the park brake mechanism located on the driver side cowl side inner panel below the instrument panel.
- Steering Column Control Module - The SCCM microcontroller is located within the top of the steering column, just below the steering wheel. Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), DESCRIPTION .
- Turn Signal Cancel Cam - The turn signal cancel cam is integral to the SCCM. The turn signal cancel cam provides automatic turn signal cancellation as the steering wheel is rotated back to its centered position following a vehicle turning maneuver.
Hard wired circuitry connects the exterior lighting system components to the electrical system of the vehicle. These hard wired circuits are integral to several wire harnesses, which are routed throughout the vehicle and retained by many different methods. These circuits may be connected to each other, to the vehicle electrical system and to the exterior lighting components through the use of a combination of soldered splices, splice block connectors and many different types of wire harness terminal connectors and insulators. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes wiring diagrams, details of wire harness routing and retention, connector pin-out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.
