Cylinder Head: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The alloy cast iron cylinder heads (Fig 1 ) are held in place by eight bolts. The spark plugs are located at the peak of the wedge between the valves.
- Position the new cylinder head gaskets onto the cylinder block.
- Position the cylinder heads onto head gaskets and cylinder block.
- Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head bolts, in sequence, to 68 N.m (50 ft. lbs.) torque (Fig 1
). Repeat procedure, tighten all cylinder head bolts to 143 N.m (105 ft. lbs.) torque. Repeat procedure to confirm that all bolts are at 143 N.m (105 ft. lbs.) torque.CAUTION: When tightening the rocker arm bolts, be sure the piston in that cylinder is NOT at TDC. Contact between the valves and piston could occur.
- Install push rods and rocker arm assemblies in their original positions. Tighten the bolts to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Install the intake manifold (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/INTAKE MANIFOLD-INSTALLATION ) and throttle body assembly.
- Install exhaust manifolds (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/EXHAUST MANIFOLD-INSTALLATION ).
- Adjust spark plugs to specifications. Install the plugs and tighten to 41 N.m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Install coil wires.
- Connect coolant temperature sending unit wire.
- Connect the fuel injector harness.
- Connect the vacuum supply hoses to the intake manifold.
- Connect the heater hoses and bypass hose.
- Install distributor cap and wires.
- Connect the accelerator linkage and, if so equipped, the speed control and transmission kick-down cables.
- Install the fuel supply line.
- Install the generator and accessory drive belt (Refer to DRIVE BELTS ). Tighten generator mounting bolt to 41 N.m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Install the intake manifold-to-generator bracket support rod. Tighten the bolts.
- Install cylinder head covers. (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S)-INSTALLATION ).
- Install closed crankcase ventilation system.
- Connect the evaporation control system.
- Install the resonator assembly, air in-let hose and air cleaner.
- Install the heat shields. Tighten the bolts to 41 N.m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Fill cooling system (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE--REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM ).
- Connect the battery negative cable.
