Test 24A: Passenger-Side Air Bag On-Off Switch Short To Ground

NOTE: Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST  after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRBIII, determine if PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is an active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is an active DTC, go to next step. If PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCH SHORT TO GROUND is a stored DTC, go to TEST 1B: REPAIRING STORED CODES .
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access passenger-side air bag on-off switch and disconnect harness connector. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between component side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminals No. 1 and 3. See Figure. Measure resistance between component side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminals No. 2 and 3. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms in both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms in either circuit, replace passenger-side air bag on-off switch.
  3. Measure resistance between component side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminals No. 1 and 2 with switch in ON position. Measure resistance between component side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminals No. 1 and 2 with switch in OFF position. If resistance is 175-190 ohms with switch in ON position and 820-870 ohms with switch in OFF position, go to next step. If resistance is not 175-190 ohms with switch in ON position and 820-870 ohms with switch in OFF position, replace passenger-side air bag on-off switch.
  4. Access Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and disconnect harness connector. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminal No. 1 (Light Green/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step.
  5. Measure resistance between harness side of passenger-side air bag on-off switch connector terminals No. 1 (Light Green/Orange wire) and No. 2 (Light Green/Dark Green wire). If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short between Light Green/Orange and Light Green/Dark Green wires. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace ACM.
