Test 16A: Driver Squib 1 Circuit Short To Ground
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Dodge Dakota. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRBIII, determine if DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is an active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is an active DTC, go to next step. If DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is a stored DTC, go to TEST 1B: REPAIRING STORED CODES .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect appropriate SRS load tool to driver-side air bag module harness connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. On DRBIII, read active DTCs. If DRBIII displays DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If DRBIII does not display DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, replace driver-side air bag module.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access clockspring and disconnect lower clockspring harness connector. See CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect appropriate SRS load tool to harness side of lower clockspring connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. On DRBIII, read active DTCs. If DRBIII displays DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If DRBIII does not display DRIVER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, replace clockspring.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access and disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) connector. See AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (ACM) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect appropriate SRS load tool adapter to harness side of ACM connector. Remove load tool from lower clockspring harness connector. Measure resistance in driver-side air bag module line 1 circuit (Black/Light Blue wire) between ground and harness side of clockspring connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Measure resistance in driver-side air bag module line 2 circuit (Dark Green/Light Blue wire) between ground and harness side of clockspring connector. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms in both circuits, replace ACM. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire.
