Engine Block: Crankshaft: Installation

  1. Remove all burrs and make sure the gear surface on the end of the crankshaft is smooth.
  2. If removed, install a new alignment pin (1). Drive the pin in using a ball- peen hammer, leaving it protruding 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) to 1.5 mm (0.059 inch) above the crankshaft.
    WARNING:

    WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO PREVENT INJURY.

    CAUTION:

    DO NOT heat the gear longer than 45 minutes.

  3. Heat the crankshaft gear for 45 minutes at a temperature of 149°C (300°F). Do not use torch, gear failure will occur. 
  4. Apply a thin coat of lubricant to the nose of the crankshaft.
  5. Position the gear with the timing mark out and install it on the crankshaft using the alignment pin. Make sure the gear contacts the shoulder.
  6. Measure the connecting rod bearing journals and crankshaft prior to bearing installation. Refer to BEARING(S), CONNECTING ROD, STANDARD PROCEDURE, 6.7L .
  7. Measure the crankshaft bearing journals and crankshaft prior to bearing installation. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE  .

  8. Install the crankshaft main bearings (2) and thrust bearings (4) into engine block (1).
  9. Install the crankshaft (3) into engine block (1).
  10. Install the connecting rod bearings onto connecting rod and bearing cap for each piston. Tighten the bolts finger tight.

  11. Position the main bearing into main bearing cap and install the bearing cap onto engine block.
  12. If NEW  bolts (2) are being used then tighten the bolts in the following order:
    • Tighten bolts to 120 N.m (89 ft. lbs.).
    • Loosen bolts 360°.
    • Tighten bolts to 60 N.m (44 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts to 85 N.m (63 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts an additional 120° turn.
  13. If USED  bolts (2) are being used then tighten the bolts in the following order:
    • Tighten bolts to 60 N.m (44 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts to 80 N.m (59 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts an additional 90° turn.
  14. Tighten the connecting rod bolts to (3) in the following order:
    • Tighten bolts to 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts to 60 N.m (44 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten bolts an additional 60° turn.
  15. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer. Refer to RETAINER, CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL SEAL, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
  16. Install the front timing case housing. Refer to HOUSING, TIMING CASE, FRONT, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .

  17. Install the engine block stiffener (2). Tighten bolts (1) to 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.).

  18. Install the oil suction tube (1). Tighten bolts (1) to:
    • M8 bolts, 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.).
    • M10 bolts, 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.).

  19. Using a new gasket (1), install the oil pan (2). Tighten bolts (3) finger tight.

  20. Using the tightening sequence shown in illustration, tighten bolts to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.).
  21. Install the engine. Refer to INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
  22. Connect both of the negative battery cables.
