Retainer, Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal: Installation

CAUTION:
The seal lip and the sealing surface on the crankshaft must be free from all oil residue to prevent seal leaks. The crankshaft and seal surfaces must be completely dry when the seal is installed. Use a soap and water solution on outside diameter of seal to ease assembly.
- Clean and remove any residual RTV from the engine block.
- Clean the crankshaft journal with a suitable solvent and dry with a clean shop towel or compressed air. Wipe the inside bore of the crankshaft seal retainer with a clean shop towel.
- Inspect the crankshaft journal for gouges, nicks, or other imperfections. If the seal groove in the crankshaft is excessively deep, obtain a crankshaft wear sleeve and oversized deal that is available in the aftermarket.
- Install a NEW crankshaft rear oil seal in the retainer using the installation tool. Using a ball peen hammer, strike the tool (2) at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions until the alignment tool bottoms out on the retainer.
- Apply RTV at the two T-Joints on the oil pan gasket.
- Apply RTV on the retainer where the T-Joints will be.NOTE:

- Install the retainer and NEW rear oil seal retainer gasket to the block and finger tighten all fasteners. Be sure the seal guide is in place prior to installing the retainer/seal assembly.
- Install the retainer bolts to the pan and tighten them finger tight.
- Torque the rear oil seal retainer bolts to 10 N.m (89 in. lbs.) starting with the lower bolts and working your way up.
- Tighten the oil pan can bolts into the bottom of the rear oil seal retainer to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.) starting with the inside two.
- Tighten the remaining 12 rear oil pan can bolts to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.).
- Reinstall the installation tool over crankshaft.
- Using a ball peen hammer, strike the tool (2) at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions until the alignment tool bottoms out on the retainer.
- Install the transmission adapter plate. Refer to PLATE, TRANSMISSION ADAPTER, INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
- Connect both of the negative battery cables.
- Start engine and check for oil leaks.
