Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
If there are any EGR DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any Fuel Pump DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any Fuel Injector DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If there are any Barometric Pressure DTCs present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
NOTE:If DTCs P0107, P0108, P0299, P220B, P229E, P229F, P22A7, P2579, P2580, or U029E are present, perform the Diagnostics for those DTCs before continuing with this one.
- Ignition on, engine not running.
- With the scan tool, check for active DTCs.
Is the DTC active?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE EGR VALVE FOR LEAKS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Inspect the EGR Valve for leaks. Also, look for visual signs (trace marks) of leakage.
Are there signs of leakage in the EGR Valve?
Yes
- Replace EGR Valve in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to VALVE, EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR), REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Perform the CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
.
Was an Exhaust System leak found?
Yes
- Repair the Exhaust System leak.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- Perform the CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS diagnostic procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR LEAKS

- CHECK THE INTAKE SYSTEM FOR LEAKS
- Perform INTAKE AIR SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST
.
Was an Intake System leak found?
Yes
- Repair the Intake Air System leak.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Perform INTAKE AIR SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTAKE AIR SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST
.
- CHECK THE CHARGE AIR COOLER FOR RESTRICTIONS
- Visually inspect the Charge Air Cooler and Radiator fins for excessive debris restricting air flow through the Charge Air Cooler.
Are the Charge Air Cooler or Radiator restricted with debris?
Yes
- Clean the debris from the Charge Air Cooler or Radiator.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6
- Visually inspect the Charge Air Cooler and Radiator fins for excessive debris restricting air flow through the Charge Air Cooler.
- CHECK THE NOX SENSOR 1/1 FOR PROPER OPERATION
- Replace the NOx Sensor 1/1 in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, NOX, REMOVAL .
- Using the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Start the engine and test drive the vehicle for an extended period.NOTE:
The test drive should be performed for a long enough period to reach normal operating temperature.
- Using the scan tool, check for DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Replacing the NOx 1/1 Sensor repaired the condition.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the poor connections.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
