REMOVAL
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbags, airbag curtains, knee blocker, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)/negative battery cable assembly from the negative battery post, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged Seat AirBag (SAB). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the SAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .
- Remove the appropriate front seat from the vehicle. Refer to SEAT, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.CAUTION:
During removal of the seat back trim cover, be certain not to tear or damage the integral nylon pouch that contains the seat airbag. If the nylon pouch or the trim cover are torn or damaged, the entire front seat back trim cover must be replaced with a new unit.
- Remove the front seat back cover as necessary. Refer to COVER, SEAT BACK, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
It is not necessary to completely remove the seat back cover from the seat frame, only far enough to remove the SAB from the seat frame.
NOTE:Do not pull on the seat airbag jumper wire harness take out or pry on the connector insulator to disengage the connector from the seat airbag inflator connector receptacle. Improper removal of this take out and its connector insulator can result in damage to the airbag circuits or the connector insulator.
- Disconnect the seat wire harness connector (1) from the top of the SAB (2). Pull the lock straight out from the connector insulator, then pull the insulator straight out from the connector receptacle to disengage and disconnect it.
- Remove the two nuts (2) from the SAB (1).
- Disengage the SAB mounting studs from the seat back frame and remove the SAB (1) from the vehicle. For a list of all components that must be inspected or replaced after an airbag deployment. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
INSTALLATION
- Position the SAB to the seat back frame.
- Install the two SAB nuts and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the seat wire harness connector to the SAB. Be certain that the connector is fully engaged in its receptacle by listening carefully for a distinct, audible click as the connector snaps in place.
- Push the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock firmly toward the SAB connector insulator until it is flush with the upper surface of the insulator.CAUTION:
Be certain that all of the trim is properly reinstalled on the front seat back frame. Failure to do so will adversely affect the function of the seat airbag system.
- Install the front seat back cover. Refer to COVER, SEAT BACK, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Install the front seat in the vehicle. Refer to SEAT, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Do not connect the negative battery cable at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
