Removal And Installation

REMOVAL

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Remove the engine timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 6.7L .

Support the engine timing cover on a flat work surface, and using a suitable punch (1) and hammer, drive the old seal (2) out of the cover from the front side of the front cover to the back side.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:

The seal lip and the sealing surface on the crankshaft must be free of all oil residue, to prevent leaks. The crankshaft and seal surface must be completely dry when the seal is installed.

Clean the front cover and gear housing gasket mating surfaces and use care not to damage surface. Ensure these surfaces are free of debris and remove any old sealant material. Do not sand these mating surfaces as this will cause potential leaks. Ensure the front crankshaft seal lip and crankshaft mating surfaces are free from all oil residue to prevent further leaks.
Inspect the gear housing and front cover for damage or cracks and replace if necessary. Inspect the crankshaft mating surface for any grooves or nicks that would affect the integrity of the NEW seal. Ensure the surface is free of debris before installing the crankshaft seal.
Apply a bead of P-80 GRIP IT to the outside diameter of the seal. Do not lubricate the inside diameter of the NEW seal.

With the front cover (3) supported by wood blocks or rubber blocks, position the front crankcase oil seal (1) to the rear of the front cover (3) and remove the plastic seal pilot (2).

Position the (special tool #2063100090, Installer, Front Crankshaft Seal) (1) and Driver Handle (special tool #C-4171, Driver Handle, Universal) (2) to the front crankshaft oil seal. Strike the driver handle until the installation tool bottoms out on the inside of the cover. Do NOT attempt to install the seal by hand.
CAUTION:
Do not distort or damage seal.

NOTE:
Ensure the front cover is not damaged from installation of the seal during repair.
Install the engine timing cover. Refer to COVER(S), ENGINE TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, 6.7L .
After the front cover is installed verify the inner diameter of the seal mated against crankshaft surface is not rolled as this will lead to further oil leaks.
Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Start the engine and take vehicle on a short test drive. Verify no oil leak is present by using a black-light for inspection. Ensure there is dye in the oil prior to inspection of oil leak after front crank seal is installed.
