Standard Procedure - Valve Springs And Seals (On Vehicle Service)

1 - VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR MD998772A
2 - SPRING COMPRESSOR ADAPTER 6779
3 - ADAPTER STUDS/SPACERS 8813
4 - AIR HOSE
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove cylinder head cover (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER - REMOVAL)  .
  3. Remove intake and exhaust rocker shaft/rocker arm assemblies (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/ROCKER ARM / ADJUSTER ASSY - REMOVAL) .
  4. Install Adapter Studs/Spacers 8813 (3) as shown. See Fig 1.
  5. Install Valve Spring Compressor MD998772A (1) with Spring Compressor Adapter 6779 (2) as shown. See Fig 1.

    1 - IGNOITION COIL
    2 - SPECIAL TOOL 8448
    CAUTION: When removing spark plugs, use Protective Sleeve 8448 (2) on extension or damage to spark plug tubes may result. See Fig 2.
  6. Remove spark plugs.
  7. Rotate crankshaft until piston of cylinder being worked on is at TDC.

  8. Install air hose (3) attached to adapter tool in spark plug hole. Apply 90-120 psi of air pressure to the cylinder. See Fig 1.
  9. Using Spring Compressor MD998772A with Spring Compressor Adapter 6779, compress valve spring and remove valve locks. See Fig 1.
  10. Release tension on valve spring. Remove valve spring retainer and valve spring.

  11. Remove valve seal/spring seat. See Fig 4.
  12. Replace valve seal/spring seat.
  13. Install valve spring and valve spring retainer.
  14. Using Spring Compressor MD998772A with Spring Compressor Adapter 6779, compress valve spring and install valve locks. See Fig 1.
  15. Release tension on valve spring.
  16. Repeat above procedures on remaining cylinders.
  17. Remove Spring Compressor MD998772A, Spring Compressor Adapter 6779, Adapter Studs/Spacers 8813.
  18. Install intake and exhaust rocker shaft/rocker arm assemblies (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/ROCKER ARM / ADJUSTER ASSY - INSTALLATION) .
  19. Install cylinder head cover (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER - INSTALLATION)  .
  20. Install spark plugs.
  21. Connect negative battery cable.
