Installation - Camshaft

CAUTION:
The 5.7L LX engine uses a unique camshaft for use with the Multi Displacement System. When installing a new camshaft, the replacement camshaft must be compatible with the Multi Displacement System.
- Lubricate camshaft lobes and camshaft bearing journals and insert the camshaft.

1 - Chain Tensioner 2 - Camshaft Sprocket 3 - Crankshaft Sprocket - Install camshaft Tensioner plate assembly. Tighten bolts to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.) torque.
- Install timing chain and sprockets (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
- Measure camshaft end play (Refer to ENGINE - SPECIFICATIONS) . If not within limits install a new thrust plate.
- Install the oil pump (Refer to ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PUMP - INSTALLATION) .
- Install the oil pick up tube.
1 - TAPPET RETAINER 2 - HYDRAULIC ROLLER TAPPET - Each tappet reused must be installed in the same position from which it was removed. When camshaft is replaced, all of the tappets must be replaced. CAUTION: The 5.7L LX engine uses both standard roller tappets and deactivating roller tappets, for use with the Multi Displacement System. The deactivating roller tappets must be used in cylinders 1,4,6,7. The deactivating tappets can be identified by the two holes in the side of the tappet body, for the latching pins.
- Install tappets (2) and retaining yoke assembly (1). (Refer to ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/HYDRAULIC LIFTERS (CAM IN BLOCK) - INSTALLATION ).
1 - CYLINDER HEAD COVER 2 - GASKET 3 - FASTENERS 4 - CYLINDER HEAD 5 - HEAD GASKET - Install both left and right cylinder heads (4) (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD - INSTALLATION) .
- Install pushrods.
- Install rocker arms (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/ROCKER ARM / ADJUSTER ASSY - INSTALLATION) .
- Install timing case cover (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT / CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION ).
- Install the oil pan (Refer to ENGINE/LUBRICATION/OIL PAN - INSTALLATION) .
- Install cylinder head covers (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) - INSTALLATION ).
- Install intake manifold (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/INTAKE MANIFOLD - INSTALLATION) .
- Install the A/C compressor.
- Install the generator.
- Install the accessory drive belt. (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTALLATION)
- Install the radiator (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE/RADIATOR - INSTALLATION) .
- Install the air cleaner assembly. (Refer to ENGINE/AIR INTAKE SYSTEM - INSTALLATION)
- Install the battery negative cable.
- Refill coolant. (Refer to COOLING - STANDARD PROCEDURE)
- Refill engine oil.
- Start engine and check for leaks.
