Hydraulic System Checks

NOTE: The convertible top system is equipped with a hydraulic bypass screw that is used to relieve pressure from the hydraulic system in the event that the top must be manually raised or lowered (such as a low battery or a convertible top operating concern). Always verify that the bypass screw is tight in the pump housing prior to replacing a hydraulic pump/motor assembly (Refer to BODY/CONVERTIBLE TOP - STANDARD PROCEDURE - BYPASS SCREW-HYDRAULIC PUMP) .
NOTE: The convertible top will raise slowly or make abnormal noise if the hydraulic fluid level is low.
NOTE: The hydraulic pump, motor, cylinders, lines and fluid are serviced only as an assembly. If a leak in the hydraulic system is found, the entire hydraulic pump/motor assembly must be replaced.
  1. Using the convertible top switch, apply power to the hydraulic pump motor and listen for operation. If the motor fails to run, go to ELECTRICAL/POWER TOP/ASSEMBLY-MOTOR/HYDRAULIC PUMP/MOTOR - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING . If OK, go to step  2.
  2. Verify the bypass screw is secure in the hydraulic pump housing (Refer to BODY/CONVERTIBLE TOP - STANDARD PROCEDURE - BYPASS SCREW-HYDRAULIC PUMP) . If OK, go to step  3. If not OK, tighten screw to 2 N.m (17 in. lbs.) and verify proper convertible top operation.
  3. Remove the cover from the top of hydraulic pump/motor assembly and inspect the hydraulic pump/motor assembly for damage or leaks. If damage or leaking is found, replace the hydraulic pump/motor assembly (Refer to BODY/CONVERTIBLE TOP/ASSEMBLY-HYDRAULIC PUMP/MOTOR - REMOVAL) . If OK, go to step  4.
  4. Remove the rear quarter panel trim and check the hydraulic cylinders and lines for damage and leaks. Small amount of oil residue at cylinder seals is normal. If damage or leaking is found, replace the hydraulic pump/motor assembly (Refer to BODY/CONVERTIBLE TOP/ASSEMBLY-HYDRAULIC PUMP/MOTOR - REMOVAL) .
