CLOCKSPRING Centering

CAUTION:
Turning steering wheel with clockspring that is not properly centered may break or damage wire tape inside clockspring. Clockspring failure may result. The following procedure must be used to center clockspring.
- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Place front wheels in straight-ahead position.
- Using appropriate plastic tool, depress clockspring locking pin to disengage lock mechanism. Rotate clockspring rotor in clockwise direction until rotor stops. DO NOT apply excessive force.
- From the end of its travel, rotate rotor 3 full turns in counterclockwise direction. Wires should end up at top of clockspring. Install steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install air bag module. DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. Perform air bag system check. See AIR BAG SYSTEM CHECK under SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK.
