Test 24A: Passenger Squib 1 Circuit Short To Ground

NOTE: Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST  after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DRBIII, determine if PASSENGER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is active or stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). If PASSENGER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is an active DTC, go to next step. If PASSENGER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND is a stored DTC, go to TEST 1B: REPAIRING STORED CODES  .
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access passenger-side air bag module and disconnect harness connector. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect appropriate SRS load tool to passenger-side air bag module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. On DRBIII, read active DTCs. If DRBIII displays PASSENGER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If DRBIII does not display PASSENGER SQUIB 1 CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND, replace passenger-side air bag module.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access and disconnect Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) connector. See OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER (ORC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect appropriate SRS load tool adapter to harness side of ORC connector. Remove load tool from passenger-side air bag harness connector. Measure resistance in passenger-side air bag module line 1 circuit (Black/Yellow wire) between ground and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector Measure resistance in passenger-side air bag module line 2 circuit (Dark Green/Yellow wire) between ground and harness side of passenger-side air bag module connector. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms in both circuits, replace ORC. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms in either circuit, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
