Code21, 22, 61 & 62: Driver-Side Air Bag Module

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
- Remove driver-side air bag module Torx screws and lift air bag module away from mounting area. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect clockspring-to-air bag module connection. Ensure clockspring connector is firmly connected to air bag module so that no gap can be seen between connector and module. If clockspring connector is properly connected, go to next step. If clockspring is not properly connected, correct poor connection and go to step 6.
- Disconnect clockspring connector and remove air bag module. Connect SRS Check Harness (MD991613) connector No. 4 to clockspring-to-air bag module connector. See Fig 1. Using 2 jumper wires, connect terminals No. 22 and 24, and No. 23 and 25 of SRS check harness connector No. 5 respectively. See Fig 2. Reconnect SRS-ECU connector. Connect negative battery cable. Using scan tool, Erase diagnostic trouble code memory. Check to see if codes 21, 22, 61 or 62 are still present. If codes are still present, go to next step. If codes are not present, replace driver-side air bag module and go to step 6.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and shield. Wait at least 60 seconds. Disconnect SRS-ECU connector. Inspect clockspring, connector, terminals and clockspring wiring harness for damage. If damage is detected, replace clockspring and go to step 6. If damage is not detected, go to next step.
- Inspect air bag system wiring harness between SRS-ECU connector and clockspring lower connector for damage. Replace air bag wiring harness if necessary and go to next step.
- Activate air bag system. Using scan tool, check to see if codes 21, 22, 61 or 62 are still present. If codes are still present, go to step 1 and repeat procedure. If codes are not present, diagnosis is complete. If codes are not present and no malfunctions were detected during inspection, air bag system may have intermittent malfunction.
