Code 43 & 44: Air Bag Warning Light Does Not Light Or Will Not Turn Off

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
- Ensure SRS-ECU connector is disconnected. Connect negative battery cable and Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect jumper wire to SRS-ECU connector terminal No. 4. See Figure. Connect other end of jumper wire to ground. If AIR BAG warning light comes on, replace SRS-ECU and go to step 7. If AIR BAG warning light does not comes on, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and shield. Wait at least 60 seconds. Remove instrument cluster and inspect AIR BAG warning light bulb. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light bulb is blown, replace bulb and go to step 7. If AIR BAG warning light bulb is not blown, go to next step.
- Check wiring harness between SRS-ECU connector and Ignition switch, including connectors C-301 and C-308 located at fuse block under left-side of instrument panel near left kick panel. See Figure. Check wiring harness between SRS-ECU connector and instrument cluster, including connectors C-101 and C-102 located behind instrument cluster. See Fig 1. Replace or repair harness as necessary and go to step 7.
- Measure resistance between ground and SRS-ECU connector terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to step 7. If resistance is more than 2 ohms, go to next step.
- Check condition of SRS-ECU connector terminals and ground wire. If SRS-ECU connector terminals and ground wire are not okay, replace wiring harness and go to next step. If SRS-ECU connector terminals and ground wire are okay, go to next step.
- Activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Using scan tool, check to see if codes 43 or 44 are still present. If codes are not present, diagnosis is complete. If codes are still present or if codes are not present and no malfunctions were detected during inspection, air bag system may have intermittent malfunction.
