Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Using scan tool, check vehicle speed sensor data values. See SCAN TOOL DATA  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Note scan tool data values, then go to next step.
  2. Using an oscilloscope, measure output waveform of vehicle speed sensor between ground and speed sensor signal circuit at 28-pin PCM harness connector terminal No. 80. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Start vehicle and place gearshift lever in 3rd gear with engine speed as specified. See SCAN TOOL DATA  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure correct waveform is output and no noise interference is present. See Figure . If correct waveform is not output and no noise interference is present, go to next step. If correct waveform is output and no problems are found, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 28-pin connector at PCM. Using a DVOM, check voltage between combination meter battery feed circuit and ground at harness side. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is not between 8-12 volts, check connectors and wire harness. Repair as necessary. If voltage is between 8-12 volts, go to next step.
  4. If 28-pin PCM harness connector is in good condition, and symptom is still present, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
