Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. If DTC 22 is set, see DTC 22: INPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT  . If DTC 23 is set, see DTC 23: OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT  . If neither DTC is set, noise interference may have caused DTC 41 to set. Inspect wiring harness to input and output shaft speed sensors on transaxle for damage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary, and go to next step.
  2. Drive vehicle at about 31 MPH in 3rd gear with engine speed at specified RPM. See NORMAL SCAN TOOL DATA VALUES  . With PCM connected, measure waveform voltage between PCM connector terminals No. 57 and 103. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Waveform voltage from input shaft speed sensor should pulsate between zero and 5 volts, with no noise in waveform. See Figure . If voltage reading is as specified, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, replace input shaft speed sensor and retest system. See INPUT & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If symptom still occurs, replace underdrive clutch retainer. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
  3. Drive vehicle at about 31 MPH in 3rd gear with engine speed at specified RPM. See NORMAL SCAN TOOL DATA VALUES  . With PCM connected, measure waveform voltage between PCM connector terminals No. 57 and 104. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Waveform voltage from output shaft speed sensor should pulsate between zero and 5 volts, with no noise in waveform. See Figure . If voltage reading is as specified, go to next step. If voltage reading is not as specified, replace output shaft speed sensor and retest system. See INPUT & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If symptom still occurs, replace output shaft. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
  4. Inspect underdrive clutch and low-reverse brake. Repair as necessary. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Retest system. If symptom still occurs, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
