Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Disconnect input shaft speed sensor. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and input shaft speed sensor battery feed circuit (terminal No. 3). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in battery feed circuit between input shaft speed sensor and ignition switch. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Ensure ignition is on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and input shaft speed sensor signal circuit (terminal No. 2). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 5 volts, check for open in signal circuit between PCM and input shaft speed sensor. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between ground and input shaft speed sensor ground circuit (terminal No. 1). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check for open in ground circuit and repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Using an oscilloscope, measure output waveform of input shaft speed sensor between input shaft speed sensor signal circuit and input shaft speed sensor ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Place gearshift lever in 3rd gear with engine speed as specified. See NORMAL SCAN TOOL DATA VALUES  . Ensure correct waveform is output and no noise interference is present. See Fig 1 . If correct waveform is not output and no noise interference is present, go to next step. If correct waveform is output and no problems are found, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  5. Replace input shaft speed sensor. See INPUT & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation. If symptom is still present, check for faulty underdrive clutch retainer. Repair as necessary. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
