Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
NOTE: Likely cause for failure may be faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), PCM or related circuit.
  1. Test VSS. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace if necessary. See VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If VSS is okay, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and battery feed circuit at VSS harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step  8 .
  3. Ensure ignition is on. Measure voltage between ground and signal circuit at VSS harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is 4.8-5.2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.8-5.2 volts, go to step  12 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between chassis ground and ground circuit at VSS harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, go to step  15 .
  5. Check condition of 28-pin PCM harness connector and VSS harness connector. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  6. Recheck for symptoms. If symptoms are still present, go to next step.
  7. Check condition of wire harness between PCM and VSS. Repair as necessary. If wire harness is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  8. Check condition of in-line body and control wire harness connectors located at junction block under left side of instrument panel. See Fig 1 . Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  9. Recheck for symptoms. If symptoms are still present, go to next step.
  10. Check condition of wire harness between VSS and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary. If wire harness is okay, go to next step.
  11. Check ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Repair as necessary
  12. Check condition of 28-pin PCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  13. Recheck for symptoms. If symptoms are still present, go to next step.
  14. Check condition of wire harness between PCM and VSS. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary. If wire harness is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  15. Check condition of wire harness between VSS and ground. Repair as necessary.
