Installation - Cylinder Head

NOTE: The Cylinder head bolts should be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down, the bolts must be replaced. See Fig 1.

Necking can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale, the bolt should be replaced.

1 - PART NUMBER FACES UP

2 - NO. 1 CYLINDER

Before installing the bolts, the threads should be coated with engine oil.
Position new cylinder head gasket on block with part number facing up. See Fig 2. Ensure gasket is seated over the locating dowels in block.
Install cylinder head on block.

Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 3. Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:

First:	All bolts to 34 N.m (25 ft. lbs.)
Second:	Bolts 1-6 to 68 N.m (50 ft. lbs.)
	Bolts 7-10 to 49 N.m (35 ft. lbs.)
Third:	Bolts 1-6 to 68 N.m (50 ft. lbs.)
	Bolts 7-10 to 49 N.m (35 ft. lbs.)
Tighten all bolts in the specified sequence an additional 90° (1/4 Turn)

CAUTION: Do not use a torque wrench for the Fourth step.

Install rocker arms and camshafts (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CAMSHAFT(S) - INSTALLATION).
Install cylinder head cover (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
Install rear timing belt cover and timing belt idler pulley (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT / CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
Install camshaft sprockets (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
Install timing belt (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
Install front timing belt cover (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT / CHAIN COVER(S) - INSTALLATION).
Install crankshaft damper (Refer to ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/VIBRATION DAMPER - INSTALLATION) .
Install accessory drive belts (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTALLATION) .
Connect exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold. Torque fasteners to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.).
Connect camshaft position sensor electrical connector.
Connect EGR solenoid electrical connector (If equipped).
Install heater tube support bracket to cylinder head.
Connect heater hose to thermostat housing.
Install intake manifold (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/INTAKE MANIFOLD - INSTALLATION) .
Install throttle body air inlet hose and air cleaner housing assembly.
Fill cooling system (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .
Connect negative battery cable.
