Test 4A: FCM, SIACM Run-Start Driver Open (Active Code)

NOTE: Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST  after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
  1. Use this procedure to diagnose the following active DTCs:
    • FCM, SIACM RUN-START DRIVER OPEN
    • FCM, SIACM RUN-START DRIVER OVER CURRENT
    • FCM, SIACM RUN-START DRIVER OVER TEMP
    • FCM, SIACM RUN-START DRIVER OVER VOLT
    • FCM, SIACM RUN-START DRIVER SHORT TO GROUND
  1. Connect DRB to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. On DRB display, read active FCM DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Read active SIACM FCM DTCs again. If DRB displays SIACM, RUN-START DRIVER OPEN, go to next step. If DRB displays SIACM, RUN-START DRIVER OVER VOLTAGE, go to step  7 . If DRB displays SIACM, RUN-START DRIVER SHORT TO GROUND, SIACM, RUN-START DRIVER OVER CURRENT or SIACM, RUN-START DRIVER OVER TEMP, go to step  8 .
  2. NOTE: FCM maintains diagnostic voltage to SIACM run-start circuit for 60 seconds after ignition switch is turned off.
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect left Side Impact Air Bag Control Module (SIACM) connector. See SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (SIACM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between ground and left SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 (Pink-Light Green wire). See Fig 1 . If voltage is 1.0-2.2 volts, replace front control module and perform body verification test. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION. See TEST VER-2: BODY VERIFICATION TEST  . If voltage is 2.4-5.0 volts, go to next step. If voltage is zero volt, go to step  4 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access and disconnect right SIACM connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between ground and right SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 (Pink-Light Green wire). If voltage is present, replace right and left side impact air bag control modules. If voltage is not present, replace left side impact air bag control module and repair open in SIACM circuit between right SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 (Pink-Light Green wire) and splice connection. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access and disconnect right SIACM connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. Measure voltage between ground and right SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 (Pink-Light Green wire). See Fig 1 . If voltage is present, replace right side impact air bag control module and repair open in SIACM circuit between left SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 (Pink-Light Green wire) and splice connection. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is not present, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Access and disconnect FCM connector. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between right SIACM harness connector terminal No. 5 and FCM harness connector, terminal No. 28 (Pink-Light Green wire). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than one ohm, replace FCM. If resistance is more than one ohm, go to next step.
  7. Access and disconnect IPM Black 20-pin connector. See INTELLIGENT POWER MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between IPM harness connector terminal No. 10 and right and left SIACM harness connector terminals No. 5 separately. See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than one ohm at either terminal, replace intelligent power module. If resistance is more than one ohm at either terminal, repair open in SIACM run-start circuit Pink-Light Green wire.
  8. Measure voltage across battery terminals. If battery voltage is more than 30 volts, check charging system and battery. Repair charging system and battery as necessary. If voltage is less than 30 volts, replace FCM. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Access and disconnect FCM connector. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and FCM harness connector terminal No. 28. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 megohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace front control module.
  10. Access and disconnect IPM Black 20-pin connector. See INTELLIGENT POWER MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground IPM harness connector terminal No. 10. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 megohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace intelligent power module.
  11. Ensure SIACM shorting connectors are engaged. Access and disconnect left SIACM connector. See SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE (SIACM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground IPM harness connector terminal No. 10. If resistance is less than 5 megohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace left side impact air bag control module.
  12. Access and disconnect right SIACM. Measure resistance between ground IPM harness connector terminal No. 10. If resistance is less than 5 megohms, repair short to ground in SIACM run-start circuit Pink-Light Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace left side impact air bag control module.
