Test NS-6A - Repairing No Response Condition

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.0L & 2.4L article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After each repair, perform TEST VER-1A.
  1. If vehicle starts, go to TEST NS-6B. If vehicle does not start, and is a JA body, go to TEST NS-6D . On all other bodies, turn ignition off. Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on TP sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Green/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Violet/White wire on PL body). If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair open grounds at Powertrain Control Module (PCM) terminals No. 2, No. 22 and No. 52 (Black wires on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Black/Tan wire and Black/White wire on PL body). If voltage is less than 6 volts, go to next step.
  3. If voltage is less than 4.4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 4.4 volts, reconnect TP sensor connector. Disconnect MAP sensor connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on MAP sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Green/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Violet/White wire on PL body). If voltage is more than 4.4 volts, go to TEST NS-6B. If voltage is less than 4.4 volts, replace TP sensor.
  4. Disconnect MAP sensor connector. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on TP sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Green/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Violet/White wire on PL body). If voltage is more than 4.4 volts, replace MAP sensor. If voltage is less than 4.4 volts, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Inspect PCM connector. Repair any terminals that are damaged, pushed out or miswired. If PCM connector is okay, go to next step.
  6. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 43 (Dark Green/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Violet/White wire on PL body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Yellow wire or Violet/White wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between PCM connector terminals No. 43 (Dark Green/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Violet/White wire on PL body) and No. 51 (Black/Dark Green wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Black/Light Blue wire on PL body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Yellow wire or Violet/White wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on PCM connector terminal No. 54 (Black/White wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Light Green/Black wire on PL body). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/White wire or Light Green/Black between PCM connector and ignition switch. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  9. Check voltage on PCM connector terminal No. 11 (Red/Black wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Red/White wire on PL body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
  10. Remove and inspect ENGINE fuse on FJ22 and F24S bodies, or FUEL PUMP SENSE fuse on PL body, from power distribution center. If fuse is blown, go to step 12). If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  11. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at PCM fuse socket (Red/Black wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Red/White wire on PL body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair open Red/Black wire or Red/White wire between PCM and fuse connector. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Red/Black wire or Red/White wire between fuse connector and battery.
  12. If fuse is blown in step 10), turn ignition off. Disconnect Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay and Fuel Pump (FP) relay. Go to next step.
  13. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM connector terminal No. 11 (Red/Black wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Red/White wire on PL body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Red/Black wire or Red/White wire. Replace fuse. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  14. Disconnect upstream Oxygen Sensor (O2S) connector. Check resistance of upstream O2S connector (component side) terminal No. 3 (White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace upstream O2S. Replace fuse. If resistance is more than 5 ohms and vehicle is an FJ22 body equipped with A/T, go to step 16). On all other vehicles, go to next step.
  15. Disconnect downstream O2S connector. Check resistance of downstream O2S connector (component side) terminal No. 3 (White wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace downstream O2S. Replace fuse. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  16. If resistance is more than 5 ohms in step 14) or 15), check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 19). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  17. Disconnect fuel pump connector. Check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire or Dark Green/Orange wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  18. Check Black/Red wire or Dark Green/Orange wire for an intermittent short to ground. If intermittent short to ground is found, repair Black/Red wire or Dark Green/Orange wire as necessary. Replace fuse. If no intermittent short is found, replace fuel pump. Replace fuse.
  19. If resistance is less than 5 ohms in step 16), ensure O2S connectors are disconnected. Disconnect ignition coil connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace ignition coil. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  20. Disconnect generator field connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair generator for short to ground. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  21. Disconnect fuel injector No. 1 connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuel injector No. 1. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  22. Disconnect fuel injector No. 2 connector. Check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuel injector No. 2. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  23. Disconnect fuel injector No. 3 connector. Check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuel injector No. 3. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  24. Disconnect fuel injector No. 4 connector. Check resistance of ASD relay connector terminal "D" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Dark Green/Orange wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace fuel injector No. 4. Replace fuse. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Red wire or Dark Green/Orange wire. Replace fuse.
