Test TC-12A - Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid CKT
NOTE:
For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.0L & 2.4L
After each repair, perform TEST VER-2A .
- This test applies only to PL body with automatic transmission. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds, and then on. Using scan tool, actuate Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid and read DTCs. If scan tool displays TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT, go to step 4). If scan tool does not display TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT, go to next step.
- At this time, the condition required to set DTC is not present. TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT DTC sets Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an open or short condition in TCC solenoid circuit. Possible causes are: open or short in TCC solenoid, open fused ignition switch output circuit, open or short control circuit wire. Go to next step.
- Inspect wiring and connectors. Repair as required. If wiring and connectors are okay, ensure scan tool is still actuating TCC solenoid. Wiggle wiring from TCC solenoid to PCM. If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT DTC returns, repair wiring where wiggling caused DTC to return. If TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT DTC does not return, see INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION .
- If scan tool displays TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CKT in step 1), turn ignition off. Disconnect TCC solenoid connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on TCC solenoid connector terminal No. 2 (Light Green/Black wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Light Green/Black wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Inspect PCM connector. Repair any terminals that are damaged, pushed out or miswired. If connector is okay, go to next step.
- Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of Orange/Black wire between TCC solenoid connector terminal No. 1 and PCM connector terminal No. 17. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Orange/Black wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance for PCM connector terminal No. 17 (Orange/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Orange/Black wire. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, reconnect TCC solenoid connector and go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on PCM connector terminal No. 17 (Orange/Black wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, replace TCC solenoid. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM.
NOTE:
A break in test sequence occurs at this point. Sequence skips from TEST TC-12A to TEST TC-14A. No test has been omitted.
