Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install cylinder head gaskets with identification number facing away from cylinder block. Tighten cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence using 4 steps. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  at end of this article.
    CAUTION: No. 9 cylinder head bolt is a 8 mm bolt and must be tightened to specification after all other 11 mm bolts are tightened to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  at end of this article.
  2. When tightening cylinder head bolts the required additional 1/4 turn, torque should exceed 90 ft. lbs. (122 N.m). Replace bolt if torque DOES NOT exceed this specification.
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Follow proper procedure when installing rocker arm assembly and push rods. See ROCKER ARMS & PUSH RODS  .
  4. When filling cooling system, remove engine temperature sending unit. Sending unit is located in front of thermostat housing, near spark plug wire holder. Fill cooling system until coolant reaches this level. Install sending unit and tighten to 60 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Finish filling cooling system.
