Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the charge air cooler outlet air tube from the throttle body. Charge Air Cooler Outlet Air Tube Replacement
- Starter Replacement (LTG) - Remove
- Reinstall the right engine mount bracket and bolt engine frame to body.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (ZL1)Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Convertible)
- Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Coupe with LTG and M5T)Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Convertible with LTG and M5T) - Remove
- Warm Up Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (LTG) - Remove
Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) from the transmission manual shift lever pin (6).
- Slide the retainer (4) forward to release the transmission range selector lever cable (5) from the bracket.
Remove the auxiliary heater pump bracket (3) from the transmission and position aside.
Place an oil drain pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes (1).
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipes (1) from the transmission, and position aside, or remove from the vehicle as necessary. - Plug the open fluid ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
- Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (M5T, LGX Engine) Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Left Side M5U) - Remove
Remove the transmission close out plug (1).
- Mark the torque converter to flexplate orientation to ensure proper realignment.
Repeat the following steps for all torque converter bolts (1) :
- Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to align the torque converter bolt with the starter opening.
- Remove and Discard the torque converter bolt.
Remove the catalytic converter shield (4) from the engine assembly.
- Disconnect the electrical wiring harness retainers from the transmission to engine fasteners and from the transmission case.
- Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
Remove the lower right transmission to engine bolt (1).
Remove the lower left transmission to engine bolts (1, 2).
Remove the left upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 2).
- Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
- Transmission Support - Remove. See Transmission Mount Replacement
- Tilt the transmission downward just enough to gain access to the upper transmission fasteners.
Disconnect the transmission vent hose (2) and retainer (1) from the transmission, then position aside.
Remove the transmission to engine bolts (1, 2, 3).
- Pull the transmission straight back.
- Install the J-21366 strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Transfer components as necessary.
- Inspect the transmission fluid cooler, hoses, and pipes for leaks or damage. Replace as necessary.
