Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Fuel Pressure Relief 
    2. NOTE:

    Do NOT reuse the fuel feed intermediate pipe. If the fuel feed intermediate pipe fittings are loosened or the pipes are removed, the pipes MUST be replaced.

  2. Remove and DISCARD the fuel feed intermediate pipe. Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe Replacement - Position 1 (LT4) 
  3. Remove the fuel feed pipe from the fuel pump. Fuel Feed Pipe Replacement (LT1, LT4 Fuel Feed to Fuel Pump) 
  4. Disconnect the engine wiring harness connectors from the fuel injection fuel rail.
  5. Clean the cylinder head pocket around the fuel injectors of ALL dirt or build up to prevent material from entering the combustion chambers.
  6. If replacing the fuel injection fuel rail, remove the fuel injection fuel rail fuel pressure sensor. Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Replacement (LT4)

    NOTE:

    The fuel injection fuel rail bolts are retained with the fuel injection fuel rail insulators and may be difficult to remove.

    Remove the fuel injection fuel rail fasteners (1).

    Install two sets of the EN-49248  remover (3).

    Install one remover in each of the fuel injection fuel rail fastener holes.

    9. NOTE:

    In some cases, the fuel injectors MAY be difficult to remove because of heavy carbon build-up or other factors. Excessive force with the removal tool can damage the fuel injection fuel rail, fuel injectors, or both. If the fuel injectors are difficult to remove, apply solvent to the base of the cylinder head bores and allow adequate soaking time to loosen the fuel injectors.

  9. Remove the fuel injection fuel rail and fuel injectors by turning each section of the EN-49248  remover in small, even increments.
    10. CAUTION:
    • Remove the fuel rail assembly carefully in order to prevent damage to the injector electrical connector terminals and the injector spray tips. Support the fuel rail after the fuel rail is removed in order to avoid damaging the fuel rail components.
    • Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system in order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering open pipes and passages.
  10. Simultaneously lift both ends of the fuel injection fuel rail (2) and remove the fuel injection fuel rail assembly from the cylinder head.
    11. NOTE:

    Whenever ANY fuel injector is removed from the cylinder head or the fuel injection fuel rail, the fuel injector MUST be rebuilt.

  11. Rebuild ALL removed fuel injectors. Fuel Rail and Injectors Cleaning and Inspection

    NOTE:

    Some vehicles are NOT originally equipped with fuel injector dust seals. If NOT present when removing the fuel injectors, ensure NEW seals are installed regardless of whether present or not.

    Remove and DISCARD the fuel injector dust seal (1).

  13. If replacing the fuel injection fuel rail, transfer components as necessary.
