Installation Procedure

    Timing Chain Tensioner (1) - Install

    2. NOTE:

    Refer to the procedure link for torque specification.

  2. Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (2) - Install [2x] - Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement

    Timing Chain (1) - Install

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.

    Hold the intake camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461-1  Holder (3) into the intake camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  5. Line up intake camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Hold the exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461-1  Holder (3) into the exhaust camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  7. Line up exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Lubricate the camshaft sprocket bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Install and hand tighten the NEW camshaft sprocket bolts (1).

    Check that the EN-52461-1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the camshaft sprocket.

  11. Rotate the EN-52461-1  Holder counter-clockwise (1).
  12. While holding the EN-52461-1  Holder (1) in the counter-clockwise position, tighten the bolt (2) 6 N.m (53 lb in) just enough to hold the EN-52461-1  Holder in place.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

    Intake Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Tighten - Camshaft Sprocket Bolt Replacement

    Check that the EN-52461-1  Holder (4) sits correctly in the hole of the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

  15. Rotate the EN-52461-1  Holder counter-clockwise.
  16. While holding the EN-52461-1  Holder in the counter-clockwise position, tighten the bolt (3) 6 N.m (53 lb in) just enough to hold the EN-52461-1  Holder in place.

    Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Tighten - Camshaft Sprocket Bolt Replacement

    EN-955 - 10 - A  Locking Pin - Remove

    Bolt (1, 2) - Loosen

  20. Slide the 2 EN-52461-1  Holder (3) out of the camshaft sprockets.

    Loosen the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461-100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5).

  22. Remove the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461-100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) from the engine.

    Remove the EN-52462-A  Camshaft Tool (1) by rotating the levers in direction of arrows.

    Loosen and disengage the bolt (2) from EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool (1).

    Clean and apply sealant to the camshaft cover opening plugs (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 

  27. Camshaft Cover Opening Plug (1) - Install and tighten [2x] 20 N.m (15 lb ft)

    Engine Wiring Harness (1) @ Camshaft Carrier - Install

    NOTE:
    • The timing chain upper cover sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the timing chain upper cover to engine block within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The timing chain upper cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant 

    Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of RTV (2) in the middle of both sides between the camshaft housing and the cylinder head T joint. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 

  30. Check that the 2 Pins (1) are in the camshaft housing or in the timing chain upper cover.

    Timing Chain Upper Cover Seal (1) - Install NEW

    Timing Belt Upper Cover Bolt M6 (3) - Install

  34. Timing Belt Upper Cover Bolt M5 (2) - Install [11x]
    35. NOTE:

    Refer to the procedure link for torque specification.

  35. Tighten the timing belt upper cover bolts in sequence. Timing Chain Upper Cover Replacement

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  37. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid (2) - Install
  38. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (1) - Install [2x] - Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Replacement - Intake

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  40. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid (2) - Install
  41. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (1) - Install [2x] - Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Replacement - Exhaust

    Engine Wiring Harness (3) - Reposition

  43. Retainer (1) @ Timing Chain Upper Cover (2) - Engage [6x]
  44. Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the camshaft position actuator valve solenoids.

    Install the ground wire (2) at the left front of the cylinder head.

  46. Engine Wiring Harness Ground Bolt (1) - Install and tighten 9 N.m (80 lb in)

    NOTE:
    • The engine front cover sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the engine front cover to engine block within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The engine front lower cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant 

    Apply approximately a 4 mm (0.16 in) thick bead of sealant (1) to the engine front cover. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 

  48. Crankshaft Balancer Bolt - Remove and DISCARD

    Install EN-52440  Crankshaft Oil Seal Ring Guide Front (2) to the crankshaft.

  50. Install the engine front cover (1) backwards using the 2 tabs to size the seal.

    Remove the engine front cover (1) after seal is sized.

  52. EN-52483  Guide Pins (2) - Install
  53. Engine Front Cover (1) - Install
  54. Remove the EN-52440  Crankshaft Oil Seal Ring Guide Front (3).

    Remove the EN-52483  Guide Pins (2).

  56. Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [9x]

    NOTE:

    Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence [9x] - Engine Front Cover Replacement 

  58. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    Retract the timing pin (3) using the handle (1) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2).

  60. Ensure to engage the slide (4) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) into the automatic transmission flexplate.
  61. Lower the vehicle.

    Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Install

    63. NOTE:

    Refer to the procedure link for torque specification.

  63. Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Install NEW - Crankshaft Balancer Replacement 
  64. EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool - Remove
  65. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) - Remove

  67. Starter - Install - Starter Replacement (LSY)
  68. Lower the vehicle.

    Engine Mount (3) - Install - Engine Mount Bracket Replacement

    Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator (1) - Install - Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement

  72. Fill the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static LSY) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716 LSY)
  73. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement 
    1. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 
    2. Approximate Fluid Capacities 
  74. Install the oil fill cap.
  75. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  76. Perform the engine oil life reset. GM Oil Life System Resetting (With Scan Tool) , or GM Oil Life System Resetting (Without Scan Tool)
  77. Check for leaks.
