Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 GMC Savana 3500, 2019 GMC Savana 2500, 2019 Chevrolet Express 3500, and 2019 Chevrolet Express 2500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the following:
    • The wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead.
    • That the J-42640  pin is installed or the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
  2. CAUTION:

    The new SIR coil assembly will be centered. Improper alignment of the SIR coil assembly may damage the unit, causing an inflatable restraint malfunction.

    NOTE:

    Do not remove the centering tab from the new SIR coil until the installation is complete. If the SIR coil does not come with a centering tab, you must center the SIR coil.

  3. Ensure the SIR coil is centered. Refer to Airbag Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering .

    Align the SIR coil assembly (1) with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly (2).

    Slide the SIR coil (4) onto the steering shaft assembly (2).

  6. Connect the electrical connectors.
  7. Firmly seat the retaining ring (3) into the groove on the steering shaft assembly (2).
  8. If a centering tab is on the SIR coil, remove the centering tab.

    Discard the centering tab.

  9. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement .

    If equipped with a tilt column, align the tilt lever into the steering column.

    Slide the tilt lever handle into the steering column until the handle locks into position.

  11. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  12. If you locked the steering column with the J-42640  pin, remove the J-42640  pin.
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
