Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove Cylinder Head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement 
    2. Fig 1: Engine Mount Bracket And Bolts

  2. Install Engine Mount Bracket (2)
  3. Install the 2 lower engine mount bracket bolts (1) to the engine block and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
  4. Install Engine Mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement 
  5. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
    6. NOTE:

    The service information is supplied with the special tool and is also available online. Go to https://gmtoolsandequipment.com.

  6. Lower the CH-49290  support tool with the CH-904  base frame and a jack.
  7. Remove Oil and Power Brake Booster Pump. Refer to Oil and Power Brake Booster Pump Replacement

  8. Remove and DISCARD the 4 connecting rod bearing cap bolts (3) from the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.
    9. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

    NOTE:

    The shear surfaces of the connecting rod and the connecting rod bearing cap form a unique fit and must not be swapped or damaged. Do not lay down on the shear surfaces.

  9. Remove the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) from the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.
    10. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  10. Remove the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1).
  11. Lower the vehicle.

    NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  12. Push the 2 pistons (1) with the 2 connecting rods (2) out of the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3 upwards.
    13. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  13. Remove the 2 connecting rod upper bearings (3) from the 2 connecting rods (2).
  14. Raise the vehicle.

  15. Remove the 2 bolts (3).
  16. Remove the EN-51140  fixing tool (2).

  17. Install the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  18. Hold the timing chain (1) up with a suitable tool like a extension (2).
    19. NOTE:

    A second technician is required.

  19. Set the cylinder 2 to TDC. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees, use a pry bar at the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  20. Remove and DISCARD the 4 connecting rod bearing cap bolts (3) from the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.
    21. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

    NOTE:

  21. Remove the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) from the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.
    22. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  22. Remove the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1).
  23. Lower the vehicle.

    NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  24. Push the 2 pistons (1) with the 2 connecting rods (4) out of the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4 upwards.
    25. NOTE:

    Lay aside in the order as they was removed.

  25. Remove the 2 connecting rod upper bearings (3) from the 2 connecting rods (4).
  26. Disassemble the piston and connecting rod. Refer to Piston and Connecting Rod Disassemble .
