Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Assemble the piston and connecting rod. Refer to Piston and Connecting Rod Assemble .
  2. Fig 1: Connecting Rod Bearings, Caps And Oil Notches

    NOTE:

    Ensure the proper seat of the oil notches (3).

    NOTE:

    If the old connecting rod bearings will be reused, install in their original position.

  3. Install the 8 connecting rod bearings (2) to the connecting rod bearing cap (1) and the connecting rod.
  4. Coat the 8 connecting rod bearings and cylinder bores with engine oil.

  6. Install a piston ring compressor in order to compress the piston rings.
  7. NOTE:

    The arrow on the top of the piston and the marks (2) of the piston and connecting rod, must point to front of the engine.

    NOTE:

    If the old piston and connecting rod will be reused, install in their original position.

  8. Install the 2 pistons (1) and the 2 connecting rods (4) with the connecting rod upper bearing (3) to the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.

  10. The arrow on the top of the pistons (1) must point to front of the engine.
  11. Raise the vehicle.

    NOTE:

    The marks (4) of the connecting rod bearing caps, must point to front of the engine.

    NOTE:

    If the old connecting rod bearing caps will be reused, install in their original position.

  13. Install the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) with the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1) to the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.
  14. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution

  15. Install 4 NEW connecting bearing cap bolts (3) and tighten in two passes:
    1. First Pass: 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    2. Final Pass: 110 degrees, using the EN-45059  angle meter.

  17. Hold the timing chain (1) up with a suitable tool like a extension (2).
  18. NOTE:

    A second technician is required.

  19. Set TDC of the cylinder 1. Rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees, use a pry bar at the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  21. Remove the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  23. Install EN-51140  fixing tool (2).
  24. Install the fixing pin into the engine block bore (1) and tighten the 2 bolts (3).
  25. Lower the vehicle.

  27. Install a piston ring compressor in order to compress the piston rings.
  28. NOTE:

    The arrow on the top of the piston and the marks (4) of the piston and connecting rod, must point to front of the engine.

    NOTE:

    If the old piston and connecting rod will be reused, install in their original position.

  29. Install the 2 pistons (1) and the 2 connecting rods (2) with the connecting rod upper bearing (3) to the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.

    NOTE:

    The marks (4) of the connecting rod bearing caps, must point to front of the engine.

    NOTE:

    If the old connecting rod bearing caps will be reused, install in their original position.

  31. Install the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) with the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1) to the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.
  32. Install 4 NEW connecting bearing cap bolts (3) and tighten in two passes:
      CAUTION:

      Refer to Fastener Caution

    1. First pass tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    2. Final pass to an additional 110 degrees, using the EN-45059  angle meter.
  33. Install Oil and Power Brake Booster Pump. Refer to Oil and Power Brake Booster Pump Replacement 
  34. NOTE:

    The service information is supplied with the special tool and is also available online. Go to https://gmtoolsandequipment.com.

  35. Install the CH-49290  support tool with the CH-904  base frame and a jack. According to the details provided in the installation manual.
  36. Lower the vehicle.
  37. Remove Engine Mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement

  39. Remove the 2 lower engine mount bracket bolts (1) from the engine block.
  40. Remove Engine Mount Bracket (2)
  41. Install Cylinder Head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement
