Circuit/System Testing

  1. Verify the conditions listed below do not exist:
    • Loose clamps, cracks or other damage in the air intake system.
    • Collapsed or restricted intake duct system.
    • Air flow restrictions, including the air filter.
    • Air leaks between the turbocharger and the intake air flow valve, including the charge air cooler assembly, refer to Charge Air Cooler Diagnosis (Leak Test)Charge Air Cooler Diagnosis (Smoke Test)
    • Leaks at the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) heater to air cleaner outlet duct interface.
    • Missing, restricted or leaking exhaust components including the EGR valve, refer to Symptoms - Engine Exhaust .
    • Loose or incorrect installation of any components.
    • Aftermarket components.
    • Incorrect fuel content or contamination, refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis .
    • If any condition is found 

      Repair the condition or replace the component as necessary.

    • Go to next step: If no condition is found 
  2. Verify the conditions listed below do not exist:
    • Damaged turbocharger.
    • Debris in the turbocharger.
    • Sticking or obstructed turbocharger vanes.
    • Damaged or restricted turbocharger vane control actuator.
    • If any condition is found 

      Repair the condition or replace the component as necessary.

    • Go to next step: If no condition is found 
  3. Disconnect the vacuum source from the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.
  4. Connect the EN-23738-A  Mityvac to the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve vacuum supply hose. Engine running, verify the vacuum is greater than -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI).
    • If -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI) or less 

      Inspect the vacuum supply hose and filter for a leak or restriction. If the supply hose is normal, replace the vacuum pump.

    • Go to next step: If greater than -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI) 
  5. Connect the vacuum source to the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve. Connect the EN-23738-A  Mityvac to the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve vacuum port on the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.
  6. Engine running, command the Turbocharger Vane Position to 5% with a scan tool. Verify the vacuum is between 0 to -40 kPa (0 to - 5.8 PSI).
    • If greater than -40 kPa (-5.8 PSI) 

      Replace the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.

    • Go to next step: If between 0 to -40 kPa (-5.8 PSI) 
  7. Command the Turbocharger Vane Position ON with a scan tool. Verify the vacuum is greater than -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI).
    • If -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI) or less 

      Replace the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.

    • Go to next step: If greater than -50 kPa (-7.25 PSI) 
  8. Inspect the turbocharger oil supply lines for a restriction.
    • If any restrictions are present 

      Repair or replace as necessary.

    • Go to next step: If no restrictions are present 
  9. Replace the turbocharger.
