Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Hold tension to the camshaft timing chain with 2 hands.

    NOTE: A second technician is required.
  2. Set the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to 60 degrees (a) before TDC of cylinder 1. Use the EN-45059  angle meter and the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

    NOTE: A second technician is required.
  3. Lay the camshaft timing chain between the timing chain guides.
  4. Coat with MoS 2 lubricating paste or engine oil. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants and Sealers .

  5. Install the intake camshaft (1).
  6. Install the 5 intake camshaft bearing caps (4) to the cylinder head.
    NOTE: Note the identification marking on the camshaft bearing cover.
  7. Install the intake bearing front cap (2) to the cylinder head.
  8. Loosely install the 12 intake camshaft bearing cap bolts (3).
  9. Tighten the 12 exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts (1) in sequence shown to 9 N.m (80 lb in), working from inside to outside in a spiral.

    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
  10. Install the intake camshaft position actuator adjuster (1).

  11. Mind the camshaft pin (2), the intake camshaft position actuator adjuster does fit in only one position.
  12. Install and hand tighten a NEW intake camshaft position actuator adjuster bolt (3).
  13. Install the EN-51148  holding tool (1) to camshafts and to the cylinder head.

    1. Turn the camshafts at the camshaft position actuator adjuster bolts (5, 6) until the EN-51148  holding tool fits.
    2. Tighten the bolt (3) in the middle.
    3. Tighten the 2 outer bolts (2, 4).
  14. Tighten the intake camshaft position actuator adjuster bolts (6) in 2 passes:
    1. First pass to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).
    2. Final pass to an additional 120 - 135 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
  15. Hold tension to the camshaft timing chain with 2 hands.

    NOTE: Second technician is required.
  16. Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (2) and (3) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

  17. Install the camshaft timing chain to the camshaft position actuator adjuster.

  18. Ensure that the self-made colored links (1, 2) match to the marks on the camshaft position adjuster actuators.
  19. Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement  - Install
  20. Push the timing chain guide - left side (2) in the direction of the arrow.

  21. Remove the 2 mm drill bit or equivalent (3) from the tensioner (1).
  22. Loosen the EN-51148  holding tool bolts (2, 3, 4).

  23. Remove the EN-51148  holding tool (1).
  24. Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement  - Install
  25. Check the position of the crankshaft, camshaft and camshaft position actuator adjuster.
    1. Turn crankshaft 720 degrees in the direction of engine rotation by the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt.
    2. Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top death center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (2) and (3) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

    3. Install the EN-51148  holding tool (1) to camshafts and to the cylinder head.

      1. Tighten the bolt (3) in the middle.
      2. Tighten the 2 both outer bolts (2, 4).
    4. If EN-51148  holding tool can be installed, the engine timing is properly adjusted.
    5. Remove the middle bolt (3) and the 2 outer bolts (2, 4 and remove the EN-51148  holding tool (1).

  28. Fuel Injection Pump - Install Fuel Injection Pump Replacement
  29. Front Wheelhouse Liner - Right Side - Install Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement
