Removal Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- For required parts check which kind of camshaft housing is installed.
- Camshaft housing with plain bearing:
NOTE: All assembly parts are replaceable.
Camshaft housing with 3 grooves (1) per camshaft.
- Camshaft housing with 2 needle and 1 bearing:
NOTE: Camshaft housing is replaceable along with the assembly parts ONLY.
Camshaft housing with 5 grooves (2) per camshaft.
- Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement (New Belt) and Timing Belt Replacement (Used Belt) .
- Remove the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Camshaft Sprocket Replacement .
- Remove the fuel injectors. Refer to Fuel Injector Replacement .
- Remove the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement .
- Remove the positive crankcase ventilation tube. Refer to Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Assembly Replacement .
- Remove the turbocharger oil feed pipe. Refer to Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe Replacement .
- Remove the 3 engine lift bracket bolts (1, 2, 5).
- Remove the 2 engine lift brackets (3, 4).
- Disconnect the camshaft position electrical connector.
- Remove the wiring harness bracket bolt (2) and the wiring harness bracket (1) and reposition the wiring harness.
- Remove the charge air cooler air hose bracket bolt and disconnect the hose spring clip from the throttle body and reposition the hose. Refer to Charge Air Cooler Outlet Air Hose Replacement .
- Loosen the camshaft housing bolts in sequence as shown in the graphic.
NOTE: Loosen the bolts in several passes to allow the camshaft housing to lift evenly.
- Remove the 18 camshaft cover bolts (3).
- Disconnect the brake booster hose at the vacuum pump assembly. Refer to Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service .
- Disconnect the small vacuum line at the vacuum pump assembly.
- Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor inline connector at the vacuum pump assembly and unclip and reposition the wiring harness.
- Remove the camshaft cover (2).
- Remove the camshaft cover gasket (1).
- Remove the camshaft position sensor bolt (8) and the camshaft position sensor (7).
- Remove and DISCARD 4 power brake booster pump bolts (4).
- Remove the power brake booster pump (5) along with power brake booster pump gasket (6).
- Remove the 3 camshaft rear cover bolts (3).
- Remove the camshaft rear cover (2) along with camshaft rear cover seal ring (1).
- Check the type of camshaft housing (2):

- Intake camshaft (3)
- Exhaust camshaft (4)
- Check the type of camshaft housing (2).
- For camshaft housing with plain bearing:
- Remove the exhaust camshaft. Refer to Exhaust Camshaft Replacement .
- Remove the intake camshaft. Refer to Intake Camshaft Replacement .
- Clean and inspect the camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Cleaning and Inspection .
