Circuit/System Verification
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Ignition On.
- Verify DTC P0117, P0118, P011B, P01F0, P0128, P0403, P040C, P040D, P040F, P041C, P041D, P046C, P2228, P245A, P245B or P245C is not set.
- If any of the DTCs are set
Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
- If none of the DTCs are set
- If any of the DTCs are set
- Ignition OFF, verify the conditions listed below do not exist:
- Leaking, damaged, kinked, restricted or incorrectly routed vacuum lines.NOTE: All vacuum lines, including those routed to the EGR cooler bypass valve, brake booster and turbocharger vane position actuator, must be carefully inspected.
- Damaged Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.
- Damaged turbocharger vane position control actuator.
- Damaged Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve.
- Damaged EGR cooler bypass actuator.
- Damaged or incorrect installation of power brake booster.
- Damaged or leaking EGR cooler vacuum tank.
- If a condition exists
Test or replace the component as necessary.
- If none of the conditions exist
- Leaking, damaged, kinked, restricted or incorrectly routed vacuum lines.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose between the vacuum pump and the EGR cooler vacuum tank at the vacuum pump and cap the hose barb.
- Disconnect the power brake booster vacuum pipe from the vacuum pump and connect the GE 23738-A or a suitable vacuum gauge, to the outlet on the vacuum pump.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum is 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.) or greater.
- If less than 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.)
Replace the vacuum pump.
- If 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.) or greater
- If less than 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.)
- Ignition Off, reconnect the vacuum supply hoses to the vacuum pump.
- Connect the GE 23738-A or a suitable vacuum gauge, to the center port on the top of the EGR cooler vacuum tank.
- Disconnect the remaining vacuum hoses from the top of the EGR cooler vacuum tank and cap the open ports.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum is 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.) or greater.
- If less than 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.)
Replace the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Vacuum Tank.
- If 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.) or greater
- If less than 90 kPa (26.6 in. Hg.)
- Reconnect the vacuum hose from the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve to the port on the top of the EGR cooler vacuum tank.NOTE: The vacuum port for the EGR cooler bypass system must remain capped until further instructions.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum dips less than 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) and recovers when commanding the Turbocharger Vane Position Solenoid Valve On and Off multiple times with a scan tool.NOTE:
- The engine must be at normal operating temperature before proceeding with the next step.
- It may take up to 10 On-Off cycles to verify that the solenoid operates consistently.
- If 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) or greater or does not recover
- Ignition Off, disconnect the vacuum outlet hose from the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve and connect the GE 23738-A to the outlet port on the valve.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum changes from 0 kPa (0 in. Hg.) to 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.) or greater while disconnecting and reconnecting the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve harness connector.
- If less than 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.)
Replace the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.
- If 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.) or greater
- If less than 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.)
- Reconnect the vacuum hose at the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve.
- Verify the turbocharger vane position actuator rod extends and retracts when disconnecting and reconnecting the Q41 Turbocharger Vane Position Control Solenoid Valve harness connector.
- If the rod does not extend or retract
Replace the turbocharger.
- If the rod extends and retracts
- If less than 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) and recovers
- Disconnect the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve vacuum hose from the port on the top of the EGR cooler vacuum tank.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum dips less than 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) and recovers while commanding the EGR Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve On and Off multiple times with a scan tool.NOTE:
- The engine must be at normal operating temperature before proceeding with the next step.
- It may take up to 10 On-Off cycles to verify that the solenoid operates consistently.
- If 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) or greater or does not recover
- Ignition Off, disconnect the vacuum outlet hose from the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve and connect the GE 23738-A to the outlet port on the valve.
- Engine idling, verify the vacuum changes from 0 kPa (0 in. Hg.) to 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.) or greater while commanding the EGR Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve On and Off with a scan tool.
- If less than 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.)
Replace the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve
- If 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.) or greater
- If less than 80 kPa (23.6 in. Hg.)
- If less than 20 kPa (5.9 in. Hg.) and recovers
- Reconnect the vacuum hose at the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve.
- Verify the EGR cooler bypass actuator linkage extends and retracts while commanding the EGR Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve On and Off with a scan tool.
- If the linkage does not extend or retract
- Disconnect the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator linkage from the EGR manifold.
- Verify the linkage extends and retracts while commanding the EGR Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve On and Off with a scan tool.
- If the linkage does not extend or retract, replace the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator.
- If the linkage extends and retracts, repair or replace the EGR manifold as necessary.
- If the linkage extends and retracts
- Clean or replace the EGR cooler. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Cooler Cleaning and Inspection .
