Circuit/System Testing

- Verify the conditions listed below do not exist:
- Low engine coolant level.
- Damaged, restricted or leaking radiator, coolant pipes or hoses.
- Contaminated engine coolant.
- Damaged, restricted or leaking EGR cooler or cooler pipes/hoses. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Cooler Cleaning and Inspection .
- Disconnected, damaged or missing EGR cooler bypass valve linkage.
- Damaged or missing Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve.
- If a condition is found
Repair or replace the component as necessary.
- If no condition is found
- If a condition is found
- Disconnect the vacuum supply hose from the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve and connect the GE 23738-A to the hose.
- Engine running, verify the vacuum is greater than 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.).
- If 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.) or less
- Ignition OFF.
- Verify the conditions listed below do not exist:
- Vacuum supply hose leak or restriction
- Vacuum tank filter restriction or damage
- Vacuum tank leak or damage
- If a condition is found repair or replace the component as necessary.
- If no condition is found, replace the vacuum pump.
- If greater than-50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.)
- Connect the vacuum supply hose to the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve. Disconnect the EGR cooler actuator vacuum tube from the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve. Connect the GE 23738-A
to the vacuum port on the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve. Engine running, verify the vacuum is between 0 to 40 kPa (0 to 11.8 in. Hg.).
- If greater than 40 kPa (11.8 in. Hg.)
Replace the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve.
- If between 0 to 40 kPa (11.8 in. Hg.)
- If greater than 40 kPa (11.8 in. Hg.)
- Command the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve ON with a scan tool. Verify the vacuum is greater than 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.).
- If 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.) or less
Replace the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve.
- If greater than 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.)
- If 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.) or less
- Connect the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator vacuum tube to the Q47 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Bypass Solenoid Valve. Disconnect the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator vacuum tube from the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator. Connect the GE 23738-A
to the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator. Engine running, command the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve ON with a scan tool. Verify the vacuum is greater than 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.)
- If 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.) or less
Repair or replace the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator vacuum tube.
- If greater than 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.)
- If 50 kPa (14.8 in. Hg.) or less
- Ignition OFF.
- Connect the GE 23738-A to the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator.
- Verify the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator linkage moves when applying vacuum to the actuator.
- If the linkage does not move
- Disconnect the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator linkage from the EGR module.
- Verify the linkage moves when applying vacuum to the actuator.
- If the linkage does not move, replace the EGR cooler bypass valve actuator.
- If the linkage moves, repair or replace the EGR module as necessary.
- If the linkage moves
- Clean or replace the EGR cooler. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Cooler Cleaning and Inspection .
