Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, measure and record the C1 Battery voltage at the terminals.
- Verify the measured voltage is between 12-15 V.
- If voltage is less than 12 V or greater than 15 V
Refer to Battery Inspection/Test .
- If voltage is between 12-15V
- If voltage is less than 12 V or greater than 15 V
- Remove the drive belts. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement , for the 1.4L (LUV) engine, Drive Belt Replacement , for the 1.8L (LUW, LWE) engine or Generator, Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement for the 2.0L (LUZ)
- Verify the crankshaft rotates rotate the crankshaft by hand using the appropriate tools.
- If the crankshaft does not rotate
Refer to Engine Will Not Crank - Crankshaft Will Not Rotate , for the 1.4L (LUV) engine, Engine Will Not Crank - Crankshaft Will Not Rotate , for the 1.8L (LUW, LWE) engines or Engine Will Not Crank - Crankshaft Will Not Rotate for the 2.0L (LUZ).
- If the crankshaft rotates
- If the crankshaft does not rotate
- Verify the engine does not crank when attempting to start the vehicle.
- If the engine cranks
Inspect the engine and belt drive system for mechanical binding, seized engine or seized generator.
- If the engine does not crank
- If the engine cranks
- Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the M64 Starter Motor B+ terminal 1 X2 and ground.
- If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is good
- Ignition OFF.
- Test for less than 2 Ω in the B+ circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, verify the fuse is not open and there is voltage at the fuse.
- If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is open
- Ignition OFF.
- Test for greater than 100 Ω between the B+ circuit and ground.
- If 100 Ω or less, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
- If greater than 100 Ω, replace the M64 Starter Motor.
- If the test lamp illuminates
- Test for less than 0.5 V between the positive battery cable and M64 Starter Motor B+ terminal 1 X2 with the ignition in the START position.
- If 0.5 V or greater
Replace the positive battery cable.
- If less than 0.5 V
- If 0.5 V or greater
- Test for less than 0.5 V between the negative battery cable and the M64 Starter Motor case with the ignition in the START position.
- If 0.5 V or greater
Replace the negative battery cable.
- less than 0.5 V
- If 0.5 V or greater
- Replace the M64 Starter Motor.
