Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. If equipped with the C67 system, remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Air Conditioning Condenser Replacement (LS7) .
  2. If equipped with the C42 system, remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (LS7 with C42)Radiator Replacement (LS7 with C67) .
  3. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement (Without AFM) Valve Lifter Replacement (With AFM) .
  4. Remove the oil pump, screen, and crankshaft oil deflector. Refer to Oil Pump, Screen, and Crankshaft Oil Deflector Replacement (LS7) .
  5. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L99, LS3, LSA, LS7) .

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    NOTE:

    Ensure that the teeth of the J 42386-A  flywheel holding tool mesh with the teeth of the engine flywheel.

  7. Install the J 42386-A  flywheel holding tool (1) and bolts. Use one M10 - 1.5 x 120 mm and one M10 - 1.5 x 45 mm bolt for proper tool operation. Tighten the J 42386-A  flywheel holding tool bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  9. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket until the camshaft sprocket alignment mark (1) and the crankshaft sprocket alignment mark (2) are aligned.

    CAUTION:

    Do not turn the crankshaft assembly after the timing chain has been removed in order to prevent damage to the piston assemblies or the valves.

  11. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts (1).
  12. Remove the camshaft sprocket (3) and timing chain (2).

  14. Remove the camshaft retainer bolts (1) and retainer (2).

    CAUTION:

    All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  16. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts into the camshaft front bolt hole.
  17. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully rotate and remove the camshaft from the engine block.
  18. Remove the bolts from the camshaft.
