Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the bearings with clean engine oil.
  2. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts into the camshaft front bolt hole.
  3. CAUTION:

    All camshaft journals are the same diameter, so care must be used in removing or installing the camshaft to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

  4. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully install the camshaft into the engine block.
  5. Remove the bolts from the front of the camshaft.

    NOTE:

    The gasket surface on the engine block should be clean and free of dirt and/or debris.

  7. Install the camshaft retainer (2) and bolts (1). Install the retainer with the sealing gasket facing the engine block.
  8. Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts (1) to 15 N.m (11 lb ft)

  10. Align the camshaft sprocket so the timing mark is in the 6 o'clock position.
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket (3), timing chain (2), and NEW bolts (1).

  13. Inspect the sprockets for proper alignment. The marks on the camshaft sprocket (1) should be located in the 6 o'clock position and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket (2) should be located in the 12 o'clock position.
  14. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  16. Remove the J 42386-A  flywheel holding tool (1) and bolts.
  17. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L99, LS3, LSA, LS7) .
  18. Install the oil pump, screen, and crankshaft oil deflector. Refer to Oil Pump, Screen, and Crankshaft Oil Deflector Replacement (LS7) .
  19. NOTE:

    If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters must also be replaced.

  20. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement (Without AFM) Valve Lifter Replacement (With AFM) .
  21. If equipped with the C42 system, install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (LS7 with C42)Radiator Replacement (LS7 with C67) .
  22. If equipped with the C67 system, install the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Air Conditioning Condenser Replacement (LS7) .
