Removal Procedure

- Open the hood.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Splash Shield Replacement
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the timing belt upper front cover. Refer to Timing Belt Upper Front Cover Removal (1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L 2H0, and LUW) .
- Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT .
- Detach the engine wiring harness from intake manifold, cylinder head cover and engine wiring harness bracket.
- Remove the coolant expansion tank closure cap.
- Remove the oil dipstick.
- Set up the crankshaft.
- Move the crankshaft in the direction of the engine rotation to the first cylinder TDC position (mark 1).
- Apply guidance marks.
- Attach 3 markings (2) as an aid to one of the camshaft adjusters, each one offset by 90° to the marking applied (1).
