Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Pontiac G5 and 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement .
  2. Remove the water pump access plate from the front cover.
  3. Drain the coolant from the water pump using the plug at the bottom of the pump. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716 Fill)  or Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill LE5, L61)  or Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill LNF) .
  4. Remove the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement (L61)  or Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement (LE5)  or Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement (LNF) .

  5. Remove the radiator outlet pipe from the rear of the water pump and the thermostat housing by gently twisting.

    IMPORTANT: The water pump holding tool supports the sprocket and chain during water pump service. The tool must be used or the balance shaft will have to be re-timed.
  6. Install the J 43651  (1) into position.
  7. Tighten the bolts on the water pump holding tool (1) into the threads on the water pump sprocket.
  8. Install the access cover bolts that were removed earlier to secure the water pump holding tool to the front cover assembly.
  9. Remove the three inner water pump sprocket to water pump bolts.

    IMPORTANT: Be sure to remove both front water pump bolts from the front of the engine block.
  10. Remove the two water pump bolts.

  11. Remove the two rear water pump bolts.

  12. Remove the water pump.
  13. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring seal.
