1 Did you review the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator description and operation? Go to Step 2  Go to Symptoms - Body Rear End 
2 Verify that the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator is malfunctioning.
Does the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator operate normally?
Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems Go to Step 3 
3 Is the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator inoperative? Go to Step 4  Go to Step 6

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the lift gate door lock harness connector.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the lift gate ajar switch signal circuit of the lift gate door lock harness connector and a good ground.
Does the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator illuminate?
Go to Step 5  Go to Step 8 
5 Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the lift gate ajar switch signal circuit of the lift gate door lock harness connector and the ground circuit of the lift gate door lock harness connector.
Does the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator illuminate?
Go to Step 9  Go to Step 11

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the lift gate door lock harness connector.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Does the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator turn OFF?
Go to Step 9  Go to Step 7 
7 Disconnect the instrument panel cluster C1 harness connector.
Does the rear hatch/gate ajar indicator turn OFF?
Go to Step 12  Go to Step 10 
8 Test the lift gate ajar switch signal circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15  Go to Step 10 
9 Inspect for poor connections at the lift gate door lock. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15  Go to Step 13 
10 Inspect for poor connections at the instrument panel cluster (IPC). Refer toTesting for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15  Go to Step 14 
11 Repair the open in the ground circuit of the lift gate door lock. Refer to Wiring Repairs and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15  -
12 Repair the short to ground in the lift gate ajar switch signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
Go to Step 15  -
13 Replace the lift gate door lock. Refer to Latch Replacement - Liftgate .
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 15  -

IMPORTANT: Perform the set up procedure for the IPC.
Replace the IPC. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 15  -
15 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
Did you correct the condition?
System OK Go to Step 2
