  1. If sent here from SYMPTOM INDEX  table, go to step  4. If not sent here from SYMPTOM INDEX  table, go to next step.
  2. If the symptom is related to the ability of the park brake system to hold and/or release, go see PARK BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT  under TROUBLESHOOTING. If not, go to step HYDRAULIC BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLESHOOTING.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle with the rear axle supported by jack stands. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. With the park brake RELEASED, attempt to rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant amount of drag. If the rear brakes have a significant amount of drag, go to next step  11. If the rear brakes do not have a significant amount of drag, go to next step.
  4. Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. Apply the park brake. Attempt to rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant amount of drag. If the rear brakes have a significant amount of drag, go to next step. If the rear brakes do not have a significant amount of drag, go to step  7.
  5. Release the park brake. Rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant reduction in the amount of drag. If the rear brakes exhibit a significant reduction in the amount of drag, go to step  21. If the rear brakes exhibit do not a significant reduction in the amount of drag, go to step  11.
  6. Visually check the park brake cable connections and the cables that are accessible on the underside of the vehicle for disconnections and/or damage. If any of the park brake cables were disconnected and/or damaged, go to next step. If any of the park cables were not disconnected and/or damaged, go to step  9.
  7. Reconnect or replace the park brake cables as necessary. After repair and/or replacement, go to next step.
  8. Check the adjustment of the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If the park brake is adjusted properly, go to step  11. If the park brake is not adjusted properly, go to next step.
  9. Adjust the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If adjustment of the park brake was attained, go to step  16. If adjustment of the park brake was not attained, go to next step.
  10. CAUTION: DO NOT depress the brake pedal with the brake rotors and/or the brake drums removed, or with the brake calipers repositioned away from the brake rotors, or damage to the brake system may result.
  11. Perform the following:
    1. Remove the brake drums. See BRAKE DRUM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    2. Inspect the park brake hardware for loose, damaged, broken or missing components. See PARK BRAKE HARDWARE INSPECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
    3. Check the drum brake adjusters for a seized condition.
If the park brake hardware and/or the park brake adjusters requires replacement, go to next step. If the park brake hardware and/or the park brake adjusters do not require replacement, go to step  13.
  12. Replace park brake hardware components as necessary. See PARK BRAKE HARDWARE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Replace the drum brake adjusting hardware as necessary. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTING HARDWARE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacement, go to next step.
  13. Have an assistant apply and release the park brake, while you observe the park brake cables for free movement. If the park brake cables move freely, go to next step. If the park brake cables do not move freely, go to step  17.
  14. Check the adjustment of the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If the park brake was adjusted properly, go to step  16. If the park brake was not adjusted properly, go to next step.
  15. Adjust the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If adjustment of the park brake was attained, go to next step. If adjustment of the park brake was not attained, go to step  26.
  16. With the transmission still in NEUTRAL, apply the park brake. Attempt to rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant amount of drag. Release the park brake. Rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant reduction of drag. If the park brake applies and releases properly, go to step  28. If the park brake does not apply and release properly, go to TEST J: PARK BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD OR RELEASE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  17. Disconnect the park brake cable connections that are accessible on the underside of the vehicle one at a time and check each cable for free movement. If any of the park brake cables accessible on the underside of the vehicle require replacement, go to next step. If the park brake cables accessible on the underside of the vehicle do not require replacement, go to step  19.
  18. Replace any of the park brake cables that do not have free movement (not releasing properly). Refer to the following procedures as necessary: After repair and/or replacement, go to next step.
  19. Perform the following:
    1. Disconnect the front park brake cable connection accessible inside the vehicle at the park brake pedal assembly and check for free movement.
    2. Replace the front park brake cable if it does not have free movement. See FRONT PARK BRAKE CABLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
If problem was found and corrected, go to step  24. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  20. Replace the park brake pedal assembly (not releasing properly). See PARK BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacement, go to step  25.
  21. Check the adjustment of the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If the park brake was adjusted properly, go to step  28. If the park brake was not adjusted properly, go to next step.
  22. Adjust the park brake. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If adjustment of the park brake was attained, go to step  27. If adjustment of the park brake was not attained, go to next step.
  23. Perform the following:
    1. Remove the brake drums, if they have not yet been removed. See BRAKE DRUM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    2. Check the drum brake adjusters for a seized condition.
    3. Replace the drum brake adjusters as necessary. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTING HARDWARE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
If problem was found and corrected, go to next step. If problem was not found, go to step  26.
